The car overheats rather quickly, I've seen in other post that people talk about checking the upper and lower hoses. I have hot upper hoses cold lower hoses. I changed the thermostat but no change, and the fan works. Not sure if it's related but I don't have have heat either. My wife tells me this has been intermittent for a couple of months. The overheating is new. I have no reason to think I have air in the system

Where do you add fluid to the system? You MUST add it to the cross-over tube if it was really low....it does sound as if you have air in the system.

OK any suggestions on how to open the crossover tube? I snapped off a 1/4 adapter then couldn't get it to budge with channel locks, being ever so careful to grip just the cap.

Lots of PB Blaster!! After liberally dousing it, wait 24 hours and try again...use 1/2 in or at LEAST 3/8 drive. Mine came loose with the 3/8's. OH yeah...a BFH helps too......If you have to ask, I can't tell you on here!

Thanks for the advise, I worry about using a BFH and making things worse. The 1/4 is what fit in the square hole, should've used the rachet and not and adapter

I was successful with using a giant set of channel locks and the heat from a portable butane torch on the outside of the threaded portion of the cap after I twisted off a 1/4" drive.

i broke a good quality 1/4 reducer and could not get the nub out. i used a vice grip and it came off easy. good luck

I busted a 1/4" ratchet on it. Little ball bearing played pachinko as it bounced down to the ground.

I ended up using a dramel to increase the square hole to 3/8". The 3/8" ratchet got it open without breaking.

If you bugged up the 1/4" square be sure to get a replacement cap from Max or your local FLM and use either di electric grease or a anit- sieze on it when you re assemble. It has an o ring so don't over tighten as you do not want to break the tube as they are no longer available (as I understand).

To get plugs out I had a friend help twist with a T handle 1/4" breaker bar with 6" extension whilst I took a very large pair of channel lock to grip the OD of the plug.

Hope this helps.

I hope this is what we are talking about here, lol

when I was first flushing mine, I held the intake hose or whatever it is on top and pulled up just enough to let the air out and it did it in waves for almost a half hour (it seemed). Glad I did, I have never had a overheating problem since

Thank to everyone for all your help and input. The good news we have heat and a steady temp gage at mid-range right where it should be. Gotta say the PB blaster is good stuff soaked last night and the filler cap came right off this morning with only 1 pinch finger and 1 cuss word, I'am a retired sailor so that's really good for me.
I just wish I tried this before I change the stat, that was alot fun, true sailor that day...
thanks again you guys are the Greastest!!!!
Tom

Glad to hear the PB Blaster helped Swabby!! I too am USN retired - as of 1975. I know a few of those choice words were were talking about!
