Programmable Fan Controller

I'm not sure this would interest anyone besides hard-core do-it-yourselfers, but I just installed a digital programmable fan controller from Dakota Digital in the Mark VIII.

I wired this in to compliment my manual cooling fan over-ride mod. See...http://www.lincolnsclub.org/forum/d...opic_id=7402&mesg_id=7402&listing_type=search

Before, I would activate the fan over-ride to maintain a cooler engine temp at the track. After a run down the track, I would activate the cooling fan and by the time I was ready to stage again, the engine temperature was cooled adequately for much better consistency by avoiding heat soak. I found this effective even on track days where the temps soared into the 90's or more.

The issue was it was basically a manual process, requiring the system to be engaged/disengaged by monitoring the temp guage in the car. Now, with the controller, I can activate the over-ride system and let the programmable controller determine when to turn the fan on or off. At the onset, I set the limits to turn on the fan at 180 degrees and off at 165 degrees. This translates to the middle of the "A" to the bottom of the "L" on the temp guage. Temperatures were verified with a digital non-contact infra-red temperature gun.

Initial tests in the garage verified proper operation and after tidying up the wiring, a test drive was in order. Although it was at night and somewhat cool(~70), the temp gauge hardly budged past "A" regardless of how hard I drove the car. More test drives are to be done, and a day at the track will prove its' merit.

FWIW, if anyone is wanting a way to control cooling fans on a transmission cooler, this would be an effective approach to use. Simply tap into the temperature guage sending unit wire and program the unit.

RE: Programmable Fan Controller

Glad to see you ended up getting it. I probaly will get one myself, in the near future. Keep us updated!
