I'm sure with 148k miles that replacing the front bearings wouldn't be a waste and other than coughing up a lung to pay for it I was wondering how much fun it's going to be.

Simple job. Comes as a unit, noticed that Rock Auto had a good price on Timken assemblies. Don't buy the cheapo units, as there are some bearings out there that are not up to par .

Ya. Cheap ones SUCK. I had PNT or something... anyway, I have replaced a FEW sets and even the set now is chirping ONCE again. I had just did these a few months ago. When I went to Advance for warranty replacement, they mentioned Timken (I think).

But for the fronts you buy the "hub assembly" . Once nut, easy to do.

You'll need a big socket and torque wrench. You can 'rent' one if you don't own one.

That's what I bought and installed. I also bought the new Dorman spindle nuts.

From RockAuto

TIMKEN Part # 513092 - $53.79

I was doing the whole front end at the time.

I invested in this cheap socket set.

It works very well and if I remember correctly? I believe the spindle nuts are 36mm with the cage on them.

I have seen reference somewhere about removing that cage. Without removing it they came right off and the new Dormans w/ cage were torqued to 250ftlbs.

That's the max for my 1/2in Craftsman torque wrench and a bunch of effort for my skinny a$$.

Thanks for the input, I'm at the point I think it's time to buy a Hayne's manual for this car, I've found them invaluable for other cars I've owned

I just changed one. It took me about 35 minutes. I'm getting good at it. I just changed the rotors like I do about every year, so that probably helped.

I had to go to 3 different auto parts stores though, one for the nut, one for the hub and one to borrow the torque wrench and socket. That took longer than the swap.:D
