Rear Airbags

Hi there,

I recently bought a 1997 Mark VIII LSC what needs some work.

Of the things what need to be addressed the main item is the rear air bags.

I got a quote for rear air bags from my mechanic and he quoted me around $600,- for the set.

I found these arnott aftermarket replacements online and was wondering if anyone has had some experience with these? $200 for a set.

My mechanic said he has installed these and says they are worthless...

Does anyone have any links to other aftermarket bags?

Thanks,
Dave

From what I heard the rear bags are ok from that vendor ... but you don't want to buy the fronts from them.. also check with eddie at americanairsuspension.com

One more thing to consider is that the rear air bags very seldom "go bad" . It is usually the shock mounts that cause a "thump". As your 'mechanic' says that Arnott rear bags are worthless, I'd consider replacing your mechanic.

I'll second that.

DFL, let us help you....what is the problem with your rear suspension? It may be as simple as a leaking sensor.

Arnott rears are just fine but go with Eddie (American Air Suspensions). He carries the same or better product for less money and better service. The rears are also VERY easy to replace, you really only need a strap wrench and a few flathead screwdrivers. You might want to try tackling it yourself.

A leaking sensor?? That is a new one :D :p!

Either way the OP needs to specify the problem at hand you may have a mis-diagnosis on hand.

600.00 is about three times too much for this job.
Bags are roughly 200.00

There is no way there is 400.00 labor putting in REAR BAGS.
Your mechanic should be TARRED AND FEATHERED
{you can quote me on that)

They dont even really require any tools to remove, other than a screwdriver to pop the solenoid clip off with.. and MAYBE a pair of pliars to squeeze the "prongs" on the bottom of the bag.
twist the bag and release the prongs on the bottom.. POOF.
You dont even really NEED to remove the rear tire, that is how easy it is.

If you want to meet up someplace here in houston.. I will install BOTH SIDES for 100.00 labor.. and you'll be back up and running in less than an hour.

I have emailed this thread to "Nightsky" he is one of the good folks here in houston that specializes in Air Suspension repair.

He should be popping in here shortly.

IF Mike/Nightsky cant help you.. look in your PM box for my cell phone number and feel free to give me a call anytime.

What part of houston are you from?

$600 seems about right to me......but ONLY if they are getting the prices from the dealer. :D

The 600,- was just for the parts...
The labour was another 185,-

The problem is that the car sits down at the back about 2 inches when I turn it off. It does not always do this, sometimes it stays up perfectly.

Maybe I can fix this myself?

Maybe I can fix this myself?

No doubt about it!
Do you have:
screwdriver
pliars/channel locks

If so.. I believe your "all set".

If you like, give me a call and I can walk you thru it as I did a fellow in galveston last week.. we replaced his bag with him under the car and me on the phone.

If you can change a flat tire, you can replace a rear air back.
They are "fisher price" easy.

Parts Quote is about 3 times too much
labor quote is about 85% too much.

Ask the guy if he would rent you his lift for 1 hour and you can "school him how to do the rear air bags".

I would bet that you, even though you've never done the rear bags, if you had access to a lift would take you 30 minutes to MAYBE 1 hour if you took your time and did it "BY FEEL WITH YOUR EYES CLOSED".

Tell him I will come do it in less than 1 hour, BLINDFOLDED.

Ups the ante...

If you bring the bags with you tonight to Lonestar Motorsports Park.
I will change then for you.. FREE.
Showing up at the track will be your "labor".

Arnott used to have a houston warehouse {that they drop shipped to}
I called them and they no longer ship to here which would mean you cant buy bags "today" in houston, unless you pay "stealership prices"..

But arnott said two rear bags 98.00 each, shipping for two bags to houston 15.00ish dollars.

If you call arnott.. hit extension 102 and ask for "dan".
