Rear Brakes (Tool needed?)

RE: Rear Brakes (Tool needed?)

You need a tool to screw in the caliper. Although you can do it with a pair of pliers just as effectively, but maybe with more "bad" words.

RE: Rear Brakes (Tool needed?)

Its pretty tough to turn the piston in. I ended up taking my calipers off and doing it on a workbench

I have this:http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=40732MUCH easier to use than the cube John is showing aboxe. If you can wait awhile, they put it on sale for half price about every three months.

Tiffany has that tool as well...
It's hands down the most effective and easiest way to screw the caliper back in.

I wouldn't attempt the "pliars method" unless I fully understood it.
I've used a combination {box end} wrench and a pair of needle nose pliars in the past.. it was successful, but definatley a PITA!!

The correct tool as pictured above can be purchased for around 40.00.
Buy it once... and you'll have it forever.

That tool from Harbor Freight is indispensable - it's got a backing plate that sits against the opposite side of the caliper to really give you leverage when screwing the piston in.

Also, be aware that you have to leave the piston in a position with the pins aligned "vertically" so they can slide into a slot in the pads.

RE: Rear Brakes (Tool needed?)

We got ours from Auto Zone and it's the same kit.
Guess AZ buys their "rental tools" from Harbor Freight?

When we rented the tool the first time we got a used kit that was pretty beat up.

The second time we rented the tool we got a brand new one that was "still in shrink wrap".

So when Tiffany asked the counter guy "when we needed to return the tool" by...
the guy said.."you dont have to return it"....

So we didn't!

Rental on the tool is 40.00, same price as buying one from harbor frieght.

just thought I'd pass that along.. for GRINS

RE: Rear Brakes (Tool needed?)

Thanks for the Help!!! I'll give it a try

RE: Rear Brakes (Tool needed?)

A friend of mine has that kit, it works great. I don't know where he got it, but he probably got it from the MAC or Snap-On tool truck.

I just borrow it when i need it.
