Relitive lower control arm position and caster alignment?

I recently replaced all of the front suspension parts on my car. I brought it in for an alignment on Monday and received a call that they can't get the front left side caster in spec because they are at the adjustment limit. The limits for caster on my 95 MK8 according to my before/after printout are +4.8 to +6.3 degrees. The before alignment caster for my car was at +4.2 degrees on the drivers/left side. After the "mis"-alignment the caster was +2.9 degrees! When I brought the car home I noticed that the drivers side strut rod nut was backed out as far as it could go meaning that the lower control arm is as far back as it will go (more negative caster)! Figuring that the technician had a momentary lapse I went there today to inform them in a nice way that the reason that they maxed out the adjustment is simply because they were going in the wrong direction with the adjustment. They claim that the caster was worse when they tried bringing the lower control arm closer to the front by moving the front nut in?

What am I missing? Clearly the front caster should go more positive the more forward that the lower control arm goes. Have any of you seen that by bringing the lower control arm closer to the back causes more positive caster? You can actually visually see the difference in the drivers vs passenger side tires in relation to the fenders.

Arguably the rear suspension alignment is also worse than before this "mis"alignment!
