Rough ride? It may be your tires.

I bought a set of stock 10 spoke chrome directional rims recently that just so happened to have a set of tires still mounted. Nothing special, just a set of no-name, generic, stock size, 16" tires - 'MasterCraft' or something like that. They still have some tread remaining, 10 to 20 percent, so I decide to leave them mounted. I put the new rims with the tires on the car with the idea to use up the remaining tread before having my Michelin Pilots demounted from the old rims and mounted on the new rims.

I haven't had these new wheels on very long but a couple of issues are immediately apparent. Traction is less(as is to be expected) and the ride is terrible. There must be no sidewall flex in these tires at all, as the ride is very harsh indeed.

All things being relevant, the Michelins definitely were a much, much better tire. I have not had the balance checked, but a moderate vibration at highway speeds is also apparent where the Michelins were smooth as silk.

Now I figure this reverse tire change would be interesting to say the least, since most of us are accustomed to trading in old tires for new tires and not the other way around. I'll definitely have to remember to be extra careful if I'm caught in the rain!
