Shot Rod Lincoln, Part II

Well, after just over 63,000 miles on a “new” motor, the wife’s Continental is showing positive for anti-freeze in the oil. This is a rebuilt Ford motor that was suppose to have had all upgrades installed. The most important upgrage being the spastic, prone to fail OEM head gaskets. I’m going to pull another oil sample at 2,000 miles and retest.

In the mean time I’m going to collect all my paper work and me and my local Lincoln dealer (who has changed hands since I had the motor rebuilt) are going to have a discussion about the impending failure of this motor and “secret” Ford warranties for head gasket failures to 100,000 miles.

Any bets that I have to wait for the motor to blow before I can get them to even consider R&Ring the motor?

Just got back the 2K oil check. It is coolant free. Maybe we lucked out. I'll check the oil again at 5K. Bearing metals show a decrease in PPM level.

The wife nixed the "go to war with Ford" idea. She figured that if the motor is doomed to fail in the same manner as last time, it is time for an upgrade.

Uh oh. ::roll::

I think that if I even suggested getting another 3.8L six that would be grounds for divorce.

Our V8 motors have been so good, I may have her convinced to go to a modular V8 in her next Conti.

Ok Sharon, now you're beginning to scare me....

The wife keep saying we can't afford a replacement car every time she complained about a strange moan, squeak, or any other unidentified sound she hears while driving/riding in her 94 Conti. She really went out of her way today, trying to get me to hear a strange "axle noise" in the rear of the car as we car pooled into Fort Worth this morning. I didn’t have the heart to remind her that the drive axle is in front of us instead of toward the rear.

By lunch she didn't think about buying a replacement car so hard that she'd started calling around the banks and our insurance company for good interest rates on a used car. She'd seen a car two weeks ago at a dealer's website. This is the same location that sold her the 94. If that car is still there, maybe she’ll check it out, when she started thinking about buying a replacement car again. Assuming it’s still there by that time.

By dinner time we were heading back into Fort Worth with a 14K check in her purse, heading to the aforementioned dealer, ready to start haggling. She'd gotten a 5.99% rate for 36 months. She starts mumbling to herself. “…he'd better give me at least 1000 dollars trade in for Sterling, or I'm walking."

It was a 2002, 20 Year Anniversary Edition pearl white Lincoln Continental, with almost 58K on the clock. It was listed as costing $16,995 and included a $200 “Internet discount.” As Is Warranty.

Daughter #2 and I sat in the corner and watched her and the sales guy (a retired air force loadmaster with arms like Popeye) go at it. The poor guy did have a chance. When the dust settled, they shook hands over the negotiated price (after two trips to the manager:) $15,095. She’d gotten $1700 bucks for her 94 Continental – and let's not forget that $200 for the “internet discount.”

As we were driving back home in the replacement car she didn’t think about all day, she shed tears over trading in the 94 Continental. She loved that car. And now, it was gone.

I love that woman!

Hubby's only gone through it twice now. }(

What I want to know is are you ever going to tell her the '02 is FWD?

You can't blame her, the pearl white is a very beautiful color. Post some pics. I know you got some! :)

RE: Shot Rod Lincoln, Part II

Oh, she KNOWS it is front wheel drive. As a matter of fact, during the test drive with the salesman, she noted a bad drift to the right. And a slight "grinding sound." The sales guy asked her to bring the car back Monday and he'll have it checked out.

Well, the dealer just called saying they are going to have to replace a front wheel bearing on the right side. On their ticket.

It looks like she is going to keep the car.
