Should I buy this 3 year warranty?

My 98 Mark Basic Model has 72,600 on the odo and is in pretty good shape. I've had the car for 4 1/2 years. Major repairs were a drive shaft replacement (under warranty which ran out about 1 1/2 years ago) and a blend door arm motor at a cost of about $900 a little over a year ago. I have an offer from Warranty Alliance Group in Perryville MO for a 3 year or 36,000 miles warranty, $100 deductible, at a cost of $1,982. This is the best cost and coverage I have encountered for my Mark. Are there any recommendations for this company and their their warranty and reliability. Their web site is www.warrantyamerica.net and the offer is until May 31, 2006 - a so called "special". I do plan on keeping my Mark for a few more years. Any input is appreciated. Thanks LOD land!

RE: Should I buy this 3 year warranty?

I looked over what they call "Platinum Deluxe" for used cars. Assuming thats the plan you are looking at, I don't see where it covers items known for failure. Maybe I'm not seeing all the details. No matter, you can review it yourself based on the items below. It appears to cover all internal engine and transmission parts along with major brake, A/C and conventional suspension parts.
Off the top of my head, here's what I didn't see that you have the best chance of needing:

- Air suspension parts such as air struts, compressor, etc.
- Neon Tail light
- HID Headlamp bulbs
- Electrochromatic mirrors
- Alternator
- Cam and Crank Sensors
- IAC Valve
- PATS security system. It covers theft controls but I'd want a guarentee its covers PATS systems.
- Power Tilt/Telescopic steering wheel
- Cup holder

My general take on aftermarket warranties is this:
The warranty companies are banking on the fact that they won't pay out as much as you are paying for the warranty. Think about it....if the chances were better that you'd get more out of the warranty than what you paid, the warranty company would not be in business. Many folks buy warranties thinking they will be keeping the car but a year or two later get the bug for another car and sell it at which time the warranty is void in most cases.

If you take care of your car and have it serviced regularly, major engine or transmission problems are very unlikely in the Mark. Tell the warranty company to add the items above to what is covered and you'll be happy to write them a check, otherwise I'd steer clear of it.

RE: Should I buy this 3 year warranty?

To each his own, but I agree with neontail's assessment. The 'known' issues most likely will not be covered. I'm always amazed what is not covered in a 'bumper to bumper' warranty.

I have an FLM 'bumper to bumper' extended warranty on the '02 TownCar at the wife's insistance. Already, we have had issues(minor)that were not covered.
