my 93 has had a shudder for a little while but it was very slight, nothing i even worried about, but for the hell of it i decided to flush it last weekend and change the filter and fluid, what a waste, this is the first time i have done this and gotten worse results. the trans shudders 10 X worse now all the time. ive heard in the past that if a ford tranny doesnt have problems dont touch it, because 9 times out of 10 if you do, it will have problems. looks like i wasted 65 bucks, now i'll drive it till the tranny dies. oh well lol what can ya do.

Ford's TSB recommends converter replacement if the Mercon V does not cure the shudder.

Sometimes the clutch material takes a while to acclimate to the friction modifiers present in Mercon V. It may take some driving to see if it improves.

I've heard others that have used a Lucas Oil product as an additive to 'fix' the shudder with some positive results.
 
napa has a red tube of this stuff called dr. tranny i used it before and within 5 miles it stopped completely, now that the fluid is fresh, i may put a tube in and see what happens, its only like 8 bucks for it, all it is , is a friction modifier, it may speed up the process of the new mercon 5. i really dont want to drop the tranny if i can help it.
 
The title of this thread makes it look like you're blaming Merc 5 for the failure of your already failing T/C.

The problem with changing the fluid on a transmission or T/C that is failing is the fact that the new fluid cleans the clutch packs and all the other peices causing the bonding surface to be "smooth" again, in turn, causing less friction and making the problems worse. Basically you "cleaned" the insides when it was too late to clean it.

This is true with all transmissions, NOT just Fords. Same with power steering pumps or engine oil, run a quart of ATF to give them a good clean just before you change the oil or flush the p.s. system.
 
well i added a little tube of the instant shudder fix today and its mint! as soon as i left napa i didnt feel it again once, sweet 6 dollar fix lol!
 
nice wonder if napa still has those 15lb bags of fast on sale i need about 2-3 of them for my car so i can keep up with the stock marks out there lol.

they might still have those for sale but it would help if you took the bags of slow out first!!
