Speaker Sizes

Sorry guys, stil getting used to the layout on this new board, so here it is again:

I have a 97' Mark with the JBL single CD player system. What sizes are the 6 speakers in my car and what are the best replacement sizes?

RE: Speaker Sizes

the woofer sizes are 5x7/6x8's all around, with 4 tweeters, two in the front on top of the doors, two in the back right next to the woofer.

6.5" rounds are a fairly easy replacement, and some folks have 7 inch woofers there as well. I have heard of one or two that put 10 inch woofers in the doors, but that's a bit extreme. It all depends on how much cutting you want to do.

RE: Speaker Sizes

Ray hit the nail on the head, just want to add the you will definatly have to cut the door for 6.5's.

RE: Speaker Sizes

thanks for the info guys. Looking to spend between $150 and $200 per set of speakers, ~$300 for a head and ~$300 for a 4 channel amp. Im doing it piece-meal a week or so at a time once I figure out exactly what I want. Im trying to figure out my whole system at once so that I only have to wire it once (I have a feeling that thats going to be a big project!). Going to run wires to accomodate for Sat. radio a cd changer and a large sub amp. Although I probably wont actually get it finished for a while, it will be there when I am ready.

EDIT: While im wiring, would it be a good idea to run some new, heavier guage wire to the speakers in the doors/panels or does anyone else bother?

RE: Speaker Sizes

I put my crossovers in the trunk, makes it easier to get to if I want to attenuate my tweets or whatever else the XO may have switches for. Also because I plan on having a show trunk, and want to show off the 4 xo's it takes to power the rainbows. The downside is that I have to run a lot more wire.

I would use 16 gauge speaker wire, do not, reuse the stock wires, they are junk. And as mentioned, 4 gauge will work for power/ground, although if you ever decided to upgrade, you can use 0 gauge as well. www.knukonceptz.com has the best wiring for the best price. I would avoid putting the crossovers in the doors, you don't want condensation to get on them. Inside the cabin is fine of course.

I saw an install a few weeks ago that put the crossovers into the doors, right where our curtosey lights are. It was neat looking, but more for the skilled installer.

RE: Speaker Sizes

Ok, I have speakers on order! I got 2 sets of Alpine Type R 6.5" component speakers. Grabbed them up for $145 a pair! Anyways, now the question is where and how to mount them? Is it ok to keep them behind the door panel, or should I get the speaker out-board of the door some how? I was thinking of making a 3-d mounting plate that the speaker could sit in and extend through the hole in the door where the speaker grille is now. I orginally thought of this because the mounting depth on these speakers seem deep. I doubt the rears will be much of a problem, but I will probably do the same thing just to get the speaker out from behind all of that crap. Any oppinions/criticsm appreciated!

RE: Speaker Sizes

Put them in the door itself, that way a good seal is created giving you better midbass (which you'll need with the alpines) Putting them on the door panel is NOT easy (although I haven't tried with a 2nd gen, first gen forget it unless you are good with fiberglass which at the time I wasn't) Just make a round mounting plate with the hole big enough for the speaker. Put it against the door or mark how much of the door itself will need cut. Cut it with a dremel and a fiberglassed reinforced disc. Drill some holes for screws, and you're set.

I used a piece of thin sheet metal at Home Depot. It works good, although cutting the speaker hole eats a lots of dremel discs.

Good Luck!

RE: Speaker Sizes

For my RF FNQs (6 1/2) in the front doors I didn't cut any metal. I fabricated a plate from MDF 12mm that fits nice over the old opening, and then another o-ring around the speaker to give some space for the membrane to move. Then I glues the two pieces together and mounted to the door. Works awesome, and the panel fits fine over this setup. The door metal didn't seem sturdy enough to hold the midbass.

RE: Speaker Sizes

What I was talking about was (yes using fiberglass) make a half-enclosure that is mounted on the door, but would come through the hole in the door panel where the speaker grille is now.

And good call on the MDF mount, that will probably make up for enough depth top get the magnet out of the window, ill probably do that as it is 100 times easier and will produce pretty much the same result!
