speedo intermittent

I own a 1992 Continental Signature Series that has developed an intermittant speedometer. It usually works when you first start out, then just goes out. The engine also stumbles and generally the steering, brakes & engine all seem to lose some power.
Anybody know what this is?

RE: speedo intermittent

Speed sensor is the first check.

The wife's problem was a bad speedo gear that was on the end of the shaft that drove the speed sensor.

Do you know where it's located on a 92? (Not that I would be able to find it, but my dear husband probably could)

RE: speedo intermittent

Sorry, I do not know anything about a 92.

If you have a FWD 3.8L V6, it's more than likely on the back side of the motor/trans-axle. A PINTA to get to, if it is the same spot as my wife's. You have to drop the manifold to get to it If you have a RWD Conti, it will be on the tranny. Should be easy to get to.
