Strange traction control related issue (I think)

I've got a question.

Has anybody out there ever heard or felt the rear breaks engage when doing a tight turn in reverse (like when pulling out of a parking spot)? I know that one wheel is moving faster than the other, but isn't the car smart enough to know that I'm going in reverse?

Also, would my Eaton posi have anything to do with this?

Never had that happen. The posi could do something like that, i suppose. What you might be feeling is one of the front wheels jumping because the car has less than 100% ackerman steering designed into it.

Most likely the source is the Eaton posi.

Is your traction control light turning on when this happens? If it is, try turning the traction control off and doing it. I know with my J-mod, 4.10's and SC Trac Loc diff I can't hardly ever drive with the traction control on or I don't get to far without setting it off, expecially when turning.

No traction control light on gen 1's.

Question for Frank: are your front tires the same size as your rear tires?

I had 245's on the rear and 225's on the front for awhile, and if the traction control came on, it wouldn't go off. It would just about shut the car down. If that's what it's doing, it's not the traction lock or the 4.10's causing it, it's the tire sizes. However, if you have the same size tires and the t/c kicks in just a little here and there, it's because you just don't have enough traction.

I don't think an Eaton Posi is going to cause any issues with traction control, but if it's real tight, it might try to lock up in when you're backing up and be causing whatever you're feeling.

Also, these cars are designed with less than 100% Ackerman steering. Ackerman steering refers to the difference in the angle that the inside tire needs to turn vs. the outside wheel for the vehicle to turn without dragging either tire sideways. The outer wheels follow a larger circle than the inner wheels and hence should be turned less, however, since your turning circle is determined by the average of the angles of the two wheels, auto manufacturers usually have the outside wheel turn a little bit more than it should in order to tighten the turning circle. Under certain circumstances, principally backing up on pavement at low speeds, you will feel the front tires jump as they are dragged across the pavement at a slight angle, load up, then all of a sudden that side load is released when one front tire or the other breaks traction.

No, trust me, it's not a tire size issue. Running 245 BFG Traction T/A's all around. When my car shifts, it shifts hard (or fast depending on how oyu wanna look at it), and my rear end is set up a little different than most others. If I'm going around a corner when it shifts the inside tire almost always breaks loose, even at low speeds. Depending on the parking surface, sometimes it will spin the tires when I put it into gear.

Well, that'll kick in the traction control. Mine still has a tendency to do that also. Sometimes i just leave the traction control on so i don't have to worry about steering so much. Other times i just let it get loose. I have yoko avs es100's on there and they'll break loose real easy under acceleration. Lotsa sideways action for me!
