Suspension fixes itself!

Hey guys figure this one out:
93 Mark w/ 17,500 mi.
Last fall the suspension started acting like all the damping was gone
out of the struts and shocks. Going down old concrete streets that
the slabs had different tilts would start the Mark rocking side to
side like a wonder horse. Friday was my clubs cruise-in night, so
I drove to the mall (rocking like a drunken sailor) to help set up
stands and parked at 3pm. When I left at 10pm I suddenly noticed
the normal firm handling was back!!! Drove it Sat/Sunday & it
continues to be OK. It has never displayed an error message/was
always at the correct height/never leaked (slammed)/compressor
never ran excessively & is not noisy/was pumping up and venting
correctly. Since it changed nearly instantly it must electrical
but what the heck could it be??? Guys on the other board suggested
that strut damper valves may be sticking open. Is this possible??

RE: Suspension fixes itself!

Our Marks have an electrical valve on top of the shock that is a computer controlled Firmness adjustment. Maybe the computer decided it needed to firm things up a bit.....

RE: Suspension fixes itself!

Just to clarify you don't struts and shocks, it would make no sense to have both. You have air springs and shocks. Since the front air spring and shock come as an assembly they are commonly referred to as the front struts. The rears have separate shock and air spring. As Jerry said the 93 Mark VIII came with an actuator on top of the shock that adjusts it for Firm or Soft, depending on the road speed and brake application. So there may be an issue with them.

RE: Suspension fixes itself!

more likely is that your shocks are shot and they actually froze up. when you beat on them enough, they became unstuck and seemed to work fine again. the firm adjustment on the shocks still isn't all that firm. if you've ever driven a supercoupe with firm ride on/off, you'll know what i mean. and these shocks do get old and freeze up. if you buy rebuilt struts from certain manufacturers, the shock portion isn't even new.
