temp gauge way up

On hot days with the a/c on, doing 80 on highway temp gauge goes all the way up to the "O" on normal. It will also happen driving hard around town, lower speed but high rpm's. I've search and read many posts, but still not sure if this is a problem or not. I've changed the stat with a stock one from Ford, had a shop check rad,fan and if it comes on when it should, replace the air deflector that was missing, tried additives, but still today it was way up there. If it stays in the normal range,is this safe and good for the car? Any input would be appricated, thanks.

Assuming you and your shop covered the basics, has anyone confirmed the actual temperature in degrees? Perhaps there is a problem with the sensor/gauge.

RE: temp gauge way up

I JUST did the thermostat swap in my 93 on Sunday.

I checked the temp of the water at the crossover tube with a Temp Gun. It read 207, the Gauge was right in the middle of the scale(Between "R" and "M")on the dash. With the AC on, it creeps a little higher, but in bumper to bumper rush hour traffic (99 Degrees by the "outside temp" display), it only went to the bottom of the "O".

Kind of set my mind at ease somewhat. What temp are the fans supposed to come on? I know it's always on when the AC is running. I thought I saw somewhere it was around 210?

Don't forget, these gauges are MIPs, or WIPs, whichever you prefer. They pretty much exist not to give accurate readings, but to warn you of potential problems. They suck, in other words, and if my interior wasn't mint, I'd hack it up to through some autometer gauges in there (Sport Comp, Black Face, not the "I'm a sheep and want to be like every other 16 year old Civic driving rice boy" white face gauges).

Have you checked the actual condition of your radiator? If it's got dirt and god only knows what else on the front of it, this will cause cooling capacity to be diminished. Also if those deposits have built up inside the radiator and coolant does not flow freely, this could be another cause. I ride between the A and the M in the dead of summer...in Texas
