Tilt/Telescope Potentiometer repair?

Unless I'm missing some unknown parts resource I cannot locate a "new" replacement poteniometer for the Tilt/Telescoping steering wheel in my 98 LSC. So I was wondering if anyone had tried to actually repair one of those puppies. Have never taken my column apart I don't even know what it consists of.. Gotta be a way to slice and dice it open and replace the defective electrical parts....

Thoughts?

I was told the potentionmeter is obsolete, so I suspect you'll have to get a column from salvage :( Or check with Jamie.

i think i still have one unless it sold this past week on auction, i'll check.

we do still have it looks like here is ebay item number Item number: 250237459545

I appreciate the responses, and I do know about the articles explaining the repair process. Jamies part on eBay kind of makes my point... Very soon there won't be ANY potentiometers available, new or used.. Then what?

Is the potentiometer itself somehow a repairable part? Because if it isn't we're screwed.. I was wondering if anyone had cracked open the actual potentiometer, which when in production were only like $30, so there can't be much to them..

...and if you get one out of the vehicle and go to electronics store (not Radio Shack) you'll prob find something that works.

If anyone has a broken one laying around, ping me. I'll see what I can do with it and if I find a way to repair it I'll provide all the ugly details :)

Mine currently works, but sometimes requires the "push up on the wheel and down on the control" in order to get it to tilt down.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I said Ping Me... That's a common term used by those of us geeks that work in the computer technology field, which I've been in since the early 80's... It's a tool used for diagnosing network issues that can be used as a synonym for "contact me"

Come on now....I know WHAT it means!!! I just didn't want to call you a geek...that wouldn't have been as funny. :D

i have forgotten how to do it now but i used to be able to ping online game servers and slow them down so much they were unusable.

I don't understand why steering parts are obsolete/unavailable for these cars . . . isn't this a bit of a safety issue???
