Time to upgrade wheel/tire combo...

Well, I am getting ready to start piecing together the suspension in my car. I'd imagine I'll use the Addco swaybars (1-3/8" minimum), Super Coupe Performance bushing package, and go to a wider wheel/tire combo as well.

I'd like to squeeze a 295 width tire (on a 16" wheel) in the rear if possible, and a 255-275 width tire in the front. I'll going to do one of 4 things. A) Get a nother set of Mark VIII rims (2 sets actually) and send them out to get widened, 1"-1 1/2" front, and 2"-3" in the rear, and powdercoated in a graphite color. Use spacers as required. B) Order a set of 16" wheels in a 8"-8.5" front and a 9"-10" rear with custom offset, get those powdercoated graphite. C) Order 17" rims in sizes similar ot above stated, also powdercoated. D) 17" front, 18" rear....and guess what, those would be powdercoated graphite as well.

So, I'm wondering, because most of you have been involved in this longer than I have, what is the widest 16" rim that will fit in the front and rear. I'd like to re-use the Mark VIII rims if possible. As I'pm sure some of you know, only a few companies make a 295/50 16 tire. Also, what is the widest wheel/tire you have seen in the rear on these cars without major body modification? What kind of things have you seen done to the suspension to clear these types of things? I thought I read somewhere recently someone had to clearance the LCA's in the rear of a Mark VIII to get a 2" wider rim to fit in the rear, but I don't know if it's different between 1st and 2nd gen or not. Those of you with larger/wider wheels than stock, what are you using?

Any reasonable ideas/suggestions will be considered.

RE: Time to upgrade wheel/tire combo...

I can't really help you with the specs on how wide the tires could fit, but [strong]option A [/strong]gets my vote. Joe had a set of stock rims widened 2". To use 295/45/16 tires on them, it required spacers. How thick ? I don't know ...

RE: Time to upgrade wheel/tire combo...

I can't answer you question directly, but I have seen 275/40/20s on the back of my car and they were nowhere close to rubbing anything on the inside, LCA, Sway Bar, etc. This is on a 8.5" wheel with a 43mm offset.

The question I would be asking is how is the offset affected by the widening of the wheel. This is what will make all the difference. Ideally, you would want to add an inch to both sides of the mounting face, but I don't think that is how it is done. :( Ponyfreak has first hand experience in this field, hopefully he will chime in...

Lets hope he replies then.

If your looking for a reference...other wheels I have been looking at are the HRE 540/540R, as well as the CCWheel Classic Modular 3 piece. I am lookign for these because I do plan to have the car at the track, and want something that will be able to be fixed if it were to become damaged.

I was also considering the ROH RT Black Ice, but wasn't about to pay what they were asking for them.

RE: Time to upgrade wheel/tire combo...

Yup, not what I'm loking for though...using the silver directionals, then powdercoating them Charcoal to match some other stuff on my car...pinstripe...smoking headlights/taillights....etc...

Just to update this...one of my friends pointed out an error...I ment to say 1-1/4" sway bar.
