tire indexing??

Finally had my wheels balanced on the hunter machine;however, I still have vibration in my car (i have a new driveshaft from dennis also). The tech says that he can't find anything else to check out, so he is going to 'index my tires and rims'. Now, I got this on my answering maching this evening and have no idea what he's talking about. Any ideas? The vibration is nowhere near what it used to be, but i'd like my lincoln to ride as smooth as possible.

RE: tire indexing??

My understanding is matching the tires with the rim that will give the best end result.

RE: tire indexing??

Well, they tried indexing each of the tires 4 times (90 degrees each time) a piece with test drives after each to no avail. they said that it must be an irregulartity in the tire(s). Or something very mysterious in the front end. Guess I'll have to wait until I get new tires, they only have 3000 good miles left in them, but I only drive the car 200 miles a month. Oh well.

RE: tire indexing??

If there was a problem with a tire - he would have been able to diagnose that on the GSP9700 (if he knew how to work it)

RE: tire indexing??

Sounds familiar. For me it turned out that the after market wheels I had just put on, did not have a relief area for the clip to set into that holds the caliper onto the axle during assembly.

It might help to make sure there is no crud on the surface of either the wheel or the caliper area that the wheel seats with also.

RE: tire indexing??

After everything that the dealer did, short of replacing the front tires, I still had the vibration. Took it home and noticed the directional rims were put on the wrong side. So while I was making them all go the same direction, I went ahead and rotated them. Be damned if that didn't fix it. Between the new driveshaft and rotating the tires, I have a crystal smooth ride. Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I'll post again soon at the rate things go bad on my beloved Lincoln.
