Traction Control

i put on some new rear rims to test the new tire size i am going to get and over 30 mph the Trac Active light comes on and the car bogs
i have the original 225/60/16 tires in the front and some used 255/45/17's in the back
is the traction control coming on because it senses the difference in tire size from front to rear or is it because the rear tires are no the right size and putting 4 tires of the same size wont fix it?
anyone know
thanks
joe

RE: Traction Control

The ABS senses tire rotation speed so if the outside diameter of the tires is very different you get your problem. 245/50R17 should be the same diameter as stock - the ones you used are smaller. Four tires all the same size should be no problem, even if they're smaller than stock.

RE: Traction Control

ABS/TC senses wheel speed with the specific purpose of comparing rotational rates. Yes, it's seeing the difference between front and rear and acting upon this. It has no idea what correct rotational speed is and doesn't really care. As long as all four tires are the same diameter, you'll have normal ABS/TC. The only problem you may encounter with tires that are different (3/4" or more circumference) will be a slight speedo inaccuracy.

RE: Traction Control

ya i figured it out after i thought about it for a while
i finally put on all the same size all around
since my rear were just a hair smaller it thought the rears were slipping compared to the front and kept coming on
but now i have all 4 cobra r rims on (17x9) with 255/45/17's on
it drives nice, and only a 2% difference smaller, so it will be 2 mph off at 100 mph
i did have to use a 1/4 inch spacer for the front rims, my inside wheel weights were rubbing the upper control arm
so it might have been better if i ordered 17x8.5 but my friend had these 17x9 and they look great
the ride is just a hair more stiff, but still VERY comfortable, and the handling is MUCH improved, musch more responsive
the reason i went with 255/45/17's instead of 245/50 was because i could get much better tires for cheaper in that size
everything that was availibler in 245 was either summer only tires, or VERY expensive
i went with a new tire that bridgestone makes called Fuzion ZRi
nice looking tire with a W speed rating and great traction in dry and wet
i will have pictures soon
they cobra r rims make it look much sportier but not too sporty
i am about to get some center caps and put a lincoln emblem on them
thanks guys
Joe

RE: Traction Control

it's coming on because of the different size tires. i had the same problem. put the same size tires on and you'll be fine. make sure you shut the t/c off whenever you drive the car as is, if you forget and kick in the t/c it can screw you.
