Question.... with the Mark VIII's... does the over drive go out often on those trany's?? and if so.. what is the usual problem.... and what would it be to fix it??

Gear 3 and 4 failures are the most common problem (car ends up with first 2 gears only). The only fix is a complete transmission replacement/rebuild.

Often times the car would "jump" out of gear on the freeway, probably the 2nd most common problem it is due to a fauly MLPS (manual lever positioning switch). Costs about $50 to replace.

ok.. cause what my car is doing... is it gets to the third gear... and when it try's to shift to OD... its like its put into Neutral... and won't go in.... doesn't grind doesn't do anything... i turn off the over drive it goes back to the 3rd gear.

Check the fluid....does it smell burnt or look dark red/black? Can you confirm that your OD light is going on/off being sure the switch is working appropriately?

I truly hate to say this, because I see this in my own future, but you should probably start saving up some money...

I would second this. During the process of my saving money, my transmission started working away at 3rd gear, too. lol

Question: What does the aftermarket have available these days? The last 4R70W I replaced was about 5 years ago, and I replaced it with a Reinhart. I know that he has since "fallen out of favor", but I loved the one I got from him and did numerous lapping days on it with no issue; I beat the snot out of it and never got a slip.
Does anyone (reputable) make a decent 4R70W anymore?

Well I have been working in a transmission shop for about 2 1/2 months and have learned a lot. Before I started there, I ordered this kit with all the upgrades... http://www.blueovalchips.com/index.php?action=item&id=48&prevaction=category&previd=4&prevstart=0

I wanted this one.... http://www.blueovalchips.com/index.php?action=item&id=49&prevaction=category&previd=4&prevstart=0

But I was low on cash and have no reason for all that... The difference is package#2 doesn't come with a torque converter (no stall on tc package 1 keep that in mind) and no upgraded frictions in package 1. The valve body is already slightly modified in option 2, but can still go further.

Anyhow hope that helps. If you choose to have it rebuilt by a shop you won't need to get charged for a new case, but I would honestly wan't the reliable route. And if they tell you oh yeah we put a shift kit in it etc. Make sure what kind it is because most placed will put a 20 dollar kit in if they can that just does a couple spring and they will drill the seperator plate.

Oh and Lonnie will give you 300 back for your core. Shipping to me in ca was like 270 or something.

They made a lot of improvements to these transmissions over the years. Go spend 400 on a low miles junkyard trans from a newer car (say, 99-03 or so), search here and tccoa and swap over a handful of sensors and solenoids, and install it yourself. With no power adders that should last the remaining life of the car.
