Tranny Shifting

I have a 1995 MK VII with 106000 miles. The transmission seems to shift in to second and third early especially if you lift when starting out. Is this normal or is there something wrong? Thanks Tom

I would suspect the accumulators and tired fluid. Look in the tech section from the home page for more detail.

You need to verify how fresh the fluid is (burnt smell, brownish color) would indicate time for a change. If that is the case then you should go to the tech section and read up on the J Mod (highly recommended) and at minimum plan on dropping the pan and changing out the filter, draining the torque convertor, and refilling with approx 15 qts of Mercon V transmission fluid.

I suggest this as what you described above could be related to lack of maintance.

First the fluid is clean and not burnt but has been in the car for 50,000 miles. The trouque converter was replaced at 50,000 miles by a Ford dealer in 2001. I plan on doing the J Mod as described in the tech section. Can you mix type III and V fluids as I'm not sure what fluid is in the car? I did not want to drain the converter. Thanks for you help

DO NOT MIX Mercon III and Mercon V!!!

Drain the converter, it' easy. It should have a drain plug. If not, you disconnect a cooler line and start the car in park and allow it to 'pump' the fluid out.

Order the parts referred to in the tech section but the expensive spring F7AZ-7F284-BA is no longer available from FORD. Any suggestions?

Lol, do you think this is good advise to give to "anyone" on the internet JP? I see a disaster if someone lets it run dry!

Leaking

Leaking

Taking car to shop as the transmission is leaking through the rubber plug in the torque converter cover. I assume the is a seal between the converter and the transmission. Too much for me to accomplish in my garage at home. I assume the transmission will need to be removed to correct this problem. :frown:

You are correct....but you could have verified it before taking it to them. :)

Maybe you should have them look into the transmission issues while they have it out!

I was planning on doing this myself sometime soon. Has Ford really discontinued this needed updated spring? Or is their an updated part number?

Spring

When I went to the Ford dealership here in south Florida they told me the spring was no longer available and there was no updated part number. There are after market springs available acording to the transmission shop working on my car.

Spring Part Number is...

Spring Part Number is...

I just had the 1-2 accumulator and Mercron V job done to my 1994 Mark VIII and I ran into the discontinued spring issue. I bought my parts from www.teamfordlv.com in Las Vegas. They have the new factory replacement part for the spring and its much cheaper...less than $10. I am going to supply you with both spring numbers, upper and lower since I am not sure which one is which at this point. I bought all of my parts from them and they were quite a bit cheaper than a dealership price. These are the Team Ford's part numbers: SPOF3LY7F284A ($9.92) and SPOF75Z7F284AA ($3.71). They had all the parts for the 1-2 accumulator upgrade. I had this job, the Mercron V change, and a cooler installed by a local mechanic. He charged me four hours labor ($200). I bought all the parts and took them to him. The lower spring in my car was broken and the only symptom I had was the 37 mph shudder supposedly due to tired Mercron III. Oh yeah if you want to call Team Ford, the number is 888.845.6331.
