Trans Leak...

Ok, The Drk Mrk has developed a leak (a good steady drip, maybe a third quart in half an hour to one hour)at the rear of the pan/bottom of the tail housing i looked to see where it was coming from, but there is no fresh fluid any higher than that point. after reading several post's in this section i am half worried that it may be the tailshaft bushing but no one seem's to give a clear description of that leak and where it comes from? can someone help a guy panicking over his baby, I'd really hate to feed my self to the shark's taking it to aamco. and i need her cuz she's my only car. Thanks in advance you guy's. Yeah i know it's been a while since i posted, but work, gym, and my band eat up my time, good thing i don't have a GF LOL.

RE: Trans Leak...

I would suggest you get under there and clean up that area as well as any other area that has the tranny fluid showing so that you can properly locate the leak. Have you had the pan off for any reason. Have you checked the oring for the dipstick. It could be the torque convertor plug if its been out, the front pump seal, tailshaft seal, or any number of places where parts go thru the case. These leaks may appear to be comming from one place but are actually coming from a different area all together. Once you get it cleaned up (Brake Cleaner works) then start the car up and see if you can spot it leaking.

RE: Trans Leak...

Yeah, i did that last night trying to beat the rain, and it started to rain so now i'm out a lift and a clean dry place to work on it, look's like i may be shark food... Well 40 bucks for a diognostic at aamco i thought isn't bad but i also made sure that the service writer knew i was a fully certified diesel mechanic and had done good prior work on that trans doing the correct updates and adding the 40k cooler and that it had the proper merkon5 fluid in it. but i was in a pinch for time and a good clean place to work. so wish me luck and any word on the bushing leak and how to ID it?

RE: Trans Leak...

The rate of leakage you depicted should make it easily identifiable. If it is the tailshaft seal, I would have the tailshaft bushing replaced and inspect the u-joints and driveshaft yoke carefully.

RE: Trans Leak...

Hey, Roadboss and Driller thanks for lookin out guy's i wish it was the output seal i could have ID'd it, waitin for the call now. if they call with a ridiculous quote i'll look to get a new one from baumans or a good used from green leaf.

RE: Trans Leak...

I don't know if it's pertinent, but I have seen some F-150s with loose tailshaft sections where it bolts to the rear of the tranny.

RE: Trans Leak...

Well, got the call yesterday and it should be done today, and it looks like the tailhousing gasket let go. so the total came to 386.00 for gasket, new pan gasket, filter, tail bushing and new mlps and labor, which i thought was reasonable. The only thing that made me raise my eyebrow was that when they put the rebuilder on the phone for me, i asked about dropping the VB to do the 2-3 shift piston update, he said it wasn't feasible and not to drive to far on trips because "my tranny was on it's last legs due to mileage" but he had No come back when i told him that i do regular fluid changes had added a 40k cooler and even when i bought the car used and dropped the pan there was only light sediment dust on the magnet.... Ok there guy you thought you had me, but good try... LOL. i think i'll still find a good one to start rebuilding and have in my garage as a "ringer" Bauman or Jerry mod style. Thanks for all the help guy's and girls. You guy's all rock.

Ha, should've told him about Tommy and his 'Grandma's' drag car with over 300K! :)

RE: Trans Leak...

Hahahaha !!! Well let's see if i really can't kill it with an SC blowin into the intake. }( }(

RE: Trans Leak...

Don't forget to allow for a new torque convertor also. We have several vendors around here that you can buy quality high performance trans and T/C's from. The reason I would go this direction would be for the waruantee and quality. Cleanliness is godlyness in assemblying these units. Dirt drives are not the place for it. I have been at enough assembly plants to verify this. Good luck on your project,
