Transmission fluid leak.......

Hey guys, I haven't been postin' very much lately with all that I have goin' on, but it's good to get on here when I can. I was wondering if you guys could help me out.....

As some of you may know, I've had my '97 off the road for over a year now, makin' some changes to the body and interior, and engine etc.... A few weeks ago, I pulled out the radiator and the aux. tranny cooler. I took one of the rubber lines from the tranny cooler and used it to loop the stock tranny lines going to and from the radiator. Ever since then, the tranny has been leaking fluid. It is NOT leaking from the transmission lines. I jacked the car up to search for the location of the leak, but couldn't point it out. I cleaned the outside of the pan, and as much of the bottom of the tranny case as possible so that it would be easier to find.

When I got back to the car a few days later, it seemed like it was coming from above the tranny pan, possibly the dipstick tube? I don't understand how it could be leaking like this, just sitting there. I estimate about 5 qts have leaked out over the past 6-8 weeks!! The car can not move under it's own power as it sits right now, so I can't get it on a lift and I only get to work on the car about 2 days per week, max. If anyone has any idea what might be going on, please let me know. Your help is always greatly appreciated. Thanks,

-Joe Michael

RE: Transmission fluid leak.......

I belive there is an o-ring for the dipstick tube that is known to leak.

RE: Transmission fluid leak.......

what he said.

also, you do not want to run the car without a tranny cooler like that. You will fry your transmission in short order. Make sure you fix that before you get it back on the road.

RE: Transmission fluid leak.......

Your leak may very well be from the fill/dipstick tube as the oring there usually will dry out, and allow fluid to leak out. Unless you have some very long extensions I would advise dropping by your local tranny shop, and have them pop in a new oring for you. It should take them 10-15 minutes to do. I paid my guy $20.00 and was glad I did as it took 4 hands to line up everything up on the lift as well.

RE: Transmission fluid leak.......

If its comming from the Passenger side then its probably the fill tube, if its coming from both sides or the drivers then it may be venting out of the top of the transmission because you are OVERHEATING it because your not running the cooler, but if you do not run it for more than 10 minutes then its definitally the fill tube where it connects to the tranny at the front right corner right above the pan.

RE: Transmission fluid leak.......

One thing I have noticed though is a good 80% of the people that have posted have warned about over heating! IF yal would have read the post you would have seen where he said that car can not move under its own power, then in a earlier post he stated that he was doing some motor work. So in my conclusion this tells me that he is NOT driving the car; their fore he cannot be over heating the trans!

i donno much about this but could your tranny pan gasket be leaking? or maby a plug wheir some linkage or wires go through the case could have dryed out and cracked to cause a leak

PS: wtf is he saying > xo < ¿?¿? lol he is trying to tell us somthing! maby he is trying to lead us to a top secret ufo landing ::roll::

RE: Transmission fluid leak.......

Without use the Front seal dries up and leaks, becomes brittle. I think there is a TSB. Potentially overfilled.
