hi my front u-joint in my car is shot. Everytime i put in it gear it clunks and when i take off it clicks. I have the new joints in my living room but i would like to know how is the easyest way to get at the drive shaft? The only 2 options i see are removing the gas tank or the rear diff, neather seem easy at all. So is their any other ways to get to the drive shaft?? While i have the shaft out and its going to be a pain in the butt to remove i am going to replace both joints now so that i do not have to do it agen. Also my driver side motor mount is gone, my dad orderd both motor mounts from super coupe performance but they sent us rear sub frame mounts. So thoes will be shiped back tomorro and the right mounts should be here next week or so. So i need to know if their is a easy way to change both motor mounts in my drive way??

RE: u-joint help!!

gas tank has to come down for the driveshaft to come out. even if you take the diff out, the gas tank still has to come down.

motor mounts shouldn't be too tough. don't know how much room you'll have with everything in there, you might have to lower the k-member a bit. but you should be able to get them done without doing that.

RE: u-joint help!!

ok sweet im guessign the gas tank is just held up by the straps on eather side right?? do i need to disconnect any wires or lines to move it enuff to do the job? if so will i need the fuel line dissconnects to get the lines off? and about how long am i looking at here is this a all day job on the marks or is it just a hr or 2?

RE: u-joint help!!

Cannot the u-joints be replaced with the driveshaft in place?

RE: u-joint help!!

He is talking about the u-joint s on the drive shaft. There are a set on each end that need to be preesed out of their location and the new set pressed in.

RE: u-joint help!!

just undo the straps, lower the tank, and support it with a jack or some blocks of wood. It doesn't have to come all the way out, and you don't have to undo the lines.

How long it takes depends on rust, experience, tools, and other factors. Personally, i don't do u-joints any more. It only costs like $15 each to have them done if i drop the driveshaft off. Lowering the tank and pulling the driveshaft should only take a couple of hours unless you break a bolt or strip something.

there's no room to press the ujoints in and out with the driveshaft in place.

Not true...I removed and re-installed my driveshaft when I replaced the rear diff. I will agree though that it is easier to drop the gas tank to remove it, as there is a lot more work that goes into removing the diff than removing the tank.

maybe there is some car-to-car variation here then. When i had the diff out of my car, i still had to drop the tank to get the driveshaft to slide out. It would slide out a little ways then hit the subframe. It almost came out, but not quite.

Either way, it's much easier to drop the gas tank than it is to remove the diff.

RE: u-joint help!!

ya i pulled the tank down a bit and it came out and its done. one of the caps on the front u-joint in on the drive shaft end had no berrings in it and the other cap in the staft had just dust. while both caps in the yoke had same gresse in them

RE: u-joint help!!

With the needle bearings all destroyed like you said I would imagine that you have found your ride much more comforting and quiet now, is it?:p :p

RE: u-joint help!!

Oh yes the ride is a lot better. Before with the bad joints above about 75 mph I could not see out of my rear view mirror because it was vibrating so badly. My dad and I just got done changing motor mounts as both of mine were bad even though it took as 3 days to do it. The ride is a lot better now with the new joints and mounts. We installed the solid rubber mounts from super coupe performance and I can tell a difference over the stock mounts (when they were good).
