Today I went to the Sixth Annual Centennial celebration of the Venderbilt Cup Races. Yeah I know, weird title. The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day attracting huge crowds. The race ran along historic Motor Parkway, some parts of the original roadway still exist. Today's show took place at Roosevelt Field, yes the one where Lindberg took off from in the Sprit of St. Louis on his solo flight from NY to Paris. it's a huge shopping mall now but one section of the Motor Parkway is preserved in a wooded area in the SW corner of the mall.

Present was a 1909 Alco-6 racer that raced in the Vanderbilt Cup in 1909 and 1910 and won both races. It also raced at the very fist Indy 500 in 1911.

This is one cool brass era car. Some history here: http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z13974/Alco_Six_Race_Car.aspx

My pictures of the Alco6 are here: http://dftowel.com/carshows/Alco6

ALso at the celebration was a car show and an autocross. Being lazy and not wanting to park far away I entered the El Camino in the car show. I hadn't even preped it for a show, it was actually in great need of a bath. Much to my surprise I won the class for all cars under 25 years old! They lumped all these cars as one class and chose the top three. There was everything from Mercedes to a Rolls Royce, a Lamboghini, several Camaros, MGs, a Lotus or two, and a couple of kit cars. The Elky came through again without even trying! The guy in the Lamborghini was fuming! :D
