whats in the cage under the trunk of Gen2?

There is a cage about 1 ft x 2ft x 6in deep under the trunk on the underside of the car. It has 2 black plastic rectangular things in it. This cage is rusting on my 97 LSC and I was just underneath the car trying to lash the front of it to the equally rusting stabilizer bar. I need to repair or replace it, and would like to know what purpose it serves and what the black things are.
 
Part of the EVAP system. This is a very common rust spot FYI. I'd either check ebay or Jamie and see if you can pick up a box for cheap.
