what are the signs of a bad wheel bearing

Any displacement what so ever.

If you have any detectable movement in the bearing (side to side, etc.), it is done.

RE: wheel bearing?

I found that there was a grumling noise, and originally thought it was a tire cord seperation. I drove it for about a thousand miles with this noise (approx. 2 weeks). As these were purchased from Wally World I had them recheck the balance and the tires. I ended up purchasing new hubs and spindles for both sides and the problem dissapearded. I wish I had done this when I did the brake job as I had to redo the caliper assmebley

Please keep in mind as a whole there is nothing wrong with the Markviii. If you happen to have a 98 model the car is still working on 7 years old and the oldest 12. These cars are not spring chickens. They have reached the point where if you wish to keep them as daily drives, they will need to be well maintained. As time goes on more problems will surface unless you address them first.

RE: wheel bearing?

He's right. One of mine now has 115,000 miles on it (the one that I did the brakes and new hubs)and even though it is getting up in miles it still runs like a raped ape. I have more issues with the silver streak as it is the garage queen and doesn't get driven much so batteries go dead and the spider valve sticks. These cars love to be driven. For the investment I think they are a great deal, but lets just keep that amongst us as we don't need to jack up the cost of these cars. Our parts are the big expense, and the inconvenience they cause when they fail.
