Where did you mount your GPS unit?

Hi everyone, I just picked up a Navigon GPS unit and I was looking at a spot to mount it. Using the supplied suction cup mount, I think it would work best for me in the bottom left side of the windshield but I was curious as to where others have mounted theirs. I tried it up high above the rearview mirror but that obstructed my view through the mirror. I remember someone (lastmrk?) writing not to mount it near the ignition switch or it could interfere with the PATS system so I'd avoid that.

If you have pics, lets see them! Thanks!

The Garmin unit I have is their PDA based GPS system (iQue) which they no longer make. I believe it is the powered mounting bracket with the speaker built in that interferes with the PATS.

Previously, I had another Garmin mounted left of the steering wheel hard wired from the fuse block which is just below. I liked that spot as it's probably the closest the top of the dash is to your line of vision.

I mount my Tom-Tom to the lower left hand side of the windshield and remove it when not in use to deter theft.

I make Hubby hold it while he's a passenger. ;) Actually, we don't even use his GPS anymore.

I have a in dash GPS, and it work's well for me. The downfall - I have to replace the DVD every year to keep up with all the road and POI changes. It is $120 for the DVD.

I just bought a portable tomtom for each of my daughters, and the updates are free online. They have also taken it one step further to include end user updates - if you feel you can trust your neighbors. :)

Thanks for the input everyone. Mike, the in-dash system looks sweet! I was considering that but its nice to be able to use the portable unit on other vehicles. And I was using the Sharon method asking my passenger to hold it but she got tired of holding it, haha.

I will go with mounting it in the lower left of the windshield and as Driller said, take it out when not in use to avoid someone taking it. I was briefly thinking of mounting it in place of the info center but besides all the stuff I'd miss on there, the install and all, it is a longer reach. :p

That's where I have my TomTom. It can be a pain to contort yourself to get it stuck really well. I had to stand outside my car to get enough pressure on it. Keep it as low as possible and you'll be fine.

I don't feel so bad now standing outside the car to put Tom-Tom in. LOL :D

I keep it low so the bottom of the unit is on the dash at a good angle to the driver's position. BTW, mine has bluetooth for handsfree use with the cell phone - a cool plus. ;)

Instead of the cord that came with it, I use a coil cord that's for my Blackberry. I keep the original cord in my Tahoe.

I ran the coil cord over the steering wheel and looped it under the tilt lever then up to the TomTom. It helps keep the cord out of the way.

I was playing around with it last night and was doing the same thing, standing outside the car to position the mount. I tucked it down close to the dash but I can't plug in the charger as the connection is on the bottom edge of the unit. Its a mini-USB connection and I remember my old Moto Razor had an angle connector so I'm going to give that a shot. I plan to tuck the wiring along the door sill and maybe hard wire it into the fuse box. I'll have to get a spare cord to have for my other car to use in that one.

This is the angle USB connector that should allow me to keep the GPS tucked down low.

I think my Blackberry cord already had the angle plug.

I'm not sure if you can direct wire these USB powered inuts. I'm sure there is a way, but I would be careful. I'm not sure how the power is regulated.

If you're in Cali, you can ONLY mount it in a 5 X 5 square in the lower left of your windshield or in a 7 X 7 inch square in the lower right. That being said, I have mine mounted to the right of my rear view mirror by the sunvisor, that way its close to eye level and easy to see. Plus if I unplug it, you can't see it without bending over and looking up so the bad guys won't be tempted.
