Why will my computer no longer turn on?

RE: Why will my computer no longer turn on?

If you find it WAS the hard drive, call (or email) the manufacturer of the old one. They warranty these things a lot longer than you think. They will require the model/ser #. If it is still under manufacturers warranty, you sent it in, you get it back repared or a new one.

RE: Why will my computer no longer turn on?

Well the good news is i'm typing this from home. the new video card did not work :( I installed windows on the bare 40 gig drive i had, and once i got it going i plugged in my 80 gig drive i use to use. luckily all my info is saved (thank god, that's a couple hundred family photos i woould have hate to have lost)

I still have no clue why windows would not load on its own, and if replacing any of the crap actually helped. I really appreciate every ones help here, it's good to have a place to turn and not pay $60/hour. :)

I guess one last question, is there a way to quickly transfer all my settings/programs/etc? Since i'm using the windows from the new install everything looks like, well, windows, not how i had it.

RE: Why will my computer no longer turn on?

You probably have a bad boot sector on the 80 gig drive, so the good news is, the drive is okay. The bad news is you will probably have to reformat the drive to make it usable as a boot drive again. It'll probably work great as a 2nd drive as is. You will however have to reload/reinstall all your programs you have on that drive to let your new Windows re-regester them as the new windows doesn't have a clue where these programs reside. Make sure you have saved all the data you wish NOT to lose. Re-install your programs on the new 'C" drive then copy each program from the 'old' drive into the new copy of that program on the 'new' HD. Everything 'should' then work as it did before.

As far as the way Windows "looks", you have to recongigure it the way you want it...it don't THINK there is a way to transfer those setting. I would worry about doing that anyway as you may also transfer the same problem you had onto the newly installed HD.

Now, BTW, would be a great time to pick up a new, bigger, hard drive. Prices have never been better. I can't believe how cheap they are!

I have a 2nd hard drive with which I copy the "My Documents" folder over to once a month.

Family mementos are indeed priceless, and no one likes to burn CDs all the time.
