Windows destroyed? please help

Hi Folks,

For the last month or two when I started my computer a pop-up would show asking me if I wanted to install N-case. It had the option of remind me later, so I did that. MY spyware program couldn't remove it, so I let it be.

A few nights ago my wife was on the computer and had it pop up. She was kind enough to click yes. Now I cannot get into windows at all. During start-up, When windows (XP btw) would come to the autocheck, a screen would show saying autochk disabled or soemthing like that, then immediatly reboot. THe cycle would comtinue forever. I cannot get into safe mode for the same reason, and also cannot restore to last good point.

My computer has a ton of info that cannot be replaced (family photos, my 2 year old daughter singing you are my sunshine, priceless stuff like that) I would like to do whatever possible to not reformat.

When installing XP, I have the option (supposedly) to add a second OS on the same Hard drive. Is this possible without losing my information. If I did this, could I transfer the info from one OS to the other? Is there another way I am missing? thanks!

I am thinking auto chack has something to do with your virus protection. I could be wrong. Re-installing sounds like a great idea and is probably inevitable... However, I would wait to get a few more responses and see what people come up with. Installing without overwriting the OS might be a way to go, but wait for some more advice.

time to upgrade to a bigger hard drive. Install the new hard drive, install windows on it, get your computer running normally. Then install your old hard drive. Pull whatever info you want off of it. Back up the real important stuff on a CD.

If you only have one hard drive in your computer, you should always have it partitioned so that you can reformat the section with your OS and not lose any data. I have a partition for the system, a partition for programs, a partition for documents, a partition for, uh, pictures, a partition for file sharing, and a completely seperate hard drive just for backups. Last time i reformatted, i lost nothing. And i didn't do any backups either.

This site has instruction on how to remove N-Case once you got your computer going again:

http://www.pchell.com/support/ncase.shtml

I have gone through the process many times where Windows is damaged. You just get a new - bigger drive. Install Windows and all you programs. Then hook up the old drive as a slave on the same cable and the new master drive. You can then recover all your data.

If per chance your data is corrupted in that the file names are gone, you can use a program called www.recovermyfiles.com to get the files back. It has worked wonders for me every time.

My dad uses quicken online backup. I don't think it's cheap, but it takes a backup of your entire drive and stores it off-site (in a server somewhere) and every night, it backs up every file that changed that day, automatically.

Wait, wait, wait, let's not be buying new hardware just yet, there are two things you can do that involves using your XP OS CD,
You can try to REPAIR the system files, http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstallfrm.htm
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=315341

OR

You can run RECOVERY CONSOLE http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;314058
http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/wxprcons.htm
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/win_xp_rec.htm

You’ll find a lot of info if you google, I would try the recovery console 1st and run the chkdsk “drive” /p /r command.

If that’s a no go then the reinstall.
Yes you can install a 2nd copy of the OS but let’s try these 1st.

Do you have a CD-burner? What is your computer, make, model, HDD size, is it partitioned? When’s the last time you did a virus scan? Windows update? Is the XP OS HOME or PRO? How far into booting does it get? See a splash screen?

RE: Windows destroyed? please help

Recovery Console will not work unless it was set up prior. But these are some great suggestions.

RE: Windows destroyed? please help

Sure it will, used to use it everyday. It'll pull what it needs off the CD if it has to rewrite/over-write any system files. Prior installation just means you have it as a startup option, by installing the CMDCONS.EXE off the CD you can select it when you press F8 instead of having to boot off a OS CD.

Hey DJ, is that a Dell? I have heard of two Dell computers doing this in the last three days. PM me if it is.
