The 'Blue Flame' and I decided to play with the big boys this past weekend, and there is no better place than the annual World Ford Challenge - the 'SuperBowl' of national Ford drag racing. }(

We arrived Thursday and spent the afternoon in an open Test and Tune preparing for Bracket Challenge races to be held on Saturday and Sunday.

While the weather was not as good as could be hoped for, the car ran well. After an opening run of 13.930, three other runs followed with ETs ranging from 13.872 to 13.815.

I took Friday as a 'day off', and joined fellow LOD members in the AutoShow Spectacular.

Bright and early Saturday morning, the racing was on. I prepared the car for rounds and ran a single time trial with an ET of 13.759 @ 99.78. I'll post more details later, but my averages for Saturday were:

R/T - 0.100
60 ft - 1.980
1/8 - 8.772 @ 79.816
1/4 - 13.718 @ 99.920
Density Altitude 793'-1125'(avg. 971')

Sunday brought another round of brackets, all new but no time trials. The weather was much warmer and the averages show it.

R/T - 0.066
60 ft - 2.014
1/8 - 8.850 @ 79.423
1/4 - 13.831 @ 98.72
Density Altitude 769'-1661'(avg. 1200')

The REAL show was the pros running the Pro Mod 5.0 class. With ETs in the 6's and trap speeds well in excess of 200 mph, the beasts were battling for a top prize of $35,000. Me? I did manage to make it to the money rounds both days, and actually picked up a check for making it to the the semi-finals in both bracket races.

RE: World Ford Challenge 9 !!!

how big a check?

car's looking good!

At 25 mpg it was a lot easier to budget for a trip like that than it is at 17 mpg.

RE: World Ford Challenge 9 !!!

Oh very cool!
I've always wanted to make it to a WFC race, but they never seem to "dip far south enough" to get into my range.

I guess I'll have to make a "trip out of it" one of these days.

Semis.. both days, that rocks!!!

post more details when you get time!!!!!

RE: World Ford Challenge 9 !!!

Congrats, JP!!! many here have no idea how big of a deal it is to make it to the semi's in a large bracket.

Congrats...any time you can bring home some money for your efforts, it was a great day at the track.

an old saying in drag racing is:

"if you want to become a millionaire in drag racing, you need to start out a billionaire!"

p.s. NICE GRILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was a HUGE bracket race in the ET-3 class(13 seconds and slower cars). I dunno, you do the math. I ran 4 times to get to the semi's field of 11 survivors on Saturday. So 11, then 22, then 44, then 88, that's 176!? When I get more time, I'll elaborate more on the details.

In TWO of the battles on Sunday in the eliminations without NO time trials, I squeeked out wins by margins of 0.004 and 0.005 seconds! I was totally impressed by the absolute quality of the field of players! There were guys that were routinely running within a hundredth(<= 0.010 seconds) of a second of their dial-ins!

Funny thing is, both losses were the first race after a several hour wait period while other classes ran. On Saturday, I beat my dial-in due to what in hindsight turned out to be a significant temperature drop. On Sunday, I simply couldn't "run my number" as close as the other guy could run his after waiting in the pits 4 hours.

That is how it is in Quick Ford and Street Ford at "Fun Ford Weekend".

250 cars enter those classes

Our "big bracket races" usually have 150-175 cars with each driver having two tech cards, so you could wind up beating the same guy TWICE or THREE times in a single race if he "buys back" after a round 1 loss.

The good thing about the two tech card scenario is you could potentially race "against yourself" in the final round and collect the "winner AND runner up" purses.

We race in quite a few "big bracket" races, and fully know what it's like to go 6-9 rounds of racing.
