Like the title says i am contemplating swapping out the power steering set up for a manual one.
Is it possible?
If so what rack would i use.
As always thanks in advance.
Regards
Tony

This is an interesting one.

As the former owner of a (relatively) rare, absolutely bare-bones 1987 4-cylinder Taurus, even then, I don't believe non-powered steering was an option. Finding a "drop in" rack could be exceedingly tricky.

I could swear we have a member here somewhere who had a whole collection of SHOs. If anyone knows, he would.

Or my age is showing, and I'm confusing this forum with a different one... :D

just cut the power steering lines.
boom done.

fwd is terrible without PS in my opinion.

out of curiosity, why would you do this?

I am restoring it for a friend it was his request if possible.
As far as cutting the lines Really you must be kidding.
You ever drive a car with a disconnected power steering rack or box?
If not i can tell you its terrible noting at all like manual steering.
If you have or know what that's like.
Why would you make such a suggestion?

Ok i will reiterate, and slightly rephrase.

Do not do this. There is no advantage.

Taurus parts are cheap and plentiful.

There is no reason not to restore it the correct way.

Maybe i have failed to express my thoughts or rather the thoughts of the customer.
So i will walk you through this step by step so you may understand.
This is a custom project the 24 valve DOHC and tranny are worked supercharger.
There are body mods custom paint etc etc etc.
The restoration or rather the re birth of this vehicle.
Have been a work in progress for years.
The correct way to restore or rather rebuild this vehicle.
Is the way the customer wants.
For those of us that make a living helping to full fill the dreams of others.
Their is a custom rack available But the project is already way over budget.
My customers are not only customers but friends.
So i figured i could save him a few bucks.
In the future if you have nothing to add that is useful.
Kindly refrain from answering my posts.
For this is not the first time you have done this.
For some reason you feel you have an axe to grind.
With all due respect grind it elsewhere.

Interesting! So was it a complete rack swap, but the new one is electric assisted?

We purchased a brand new original equipment steering rack. We filled it with hydraulic fluid, where the pressure line and return line would go.
We capped it off, we then installed the electric assist under the dash. Works so well i was thinking about doing it to my Mark. Pick up about another 8-10 horses, especially in the higher R.P.M ranges. From what i have heard anyways.
