new to the front wheel 4.6, and new purchase shifts erratically. happily replaced vss today, and new brakes on front, test drove and it is just the same. cruise worked b-4, did not test too frustrated that trans still shifted wrong. any ideas besides the vss? thanks

Thanks for your response, it shifts fine 1-2, but 2-3, it just starts free revving. I can punch gas 2 or 3 times and it will shift to 3, and then 4 pretty normally. wot, it does about the same, winds high, shifts very hard with tons of torque steer. I have seen a lot of valve body replacement rumors on this tranny.

The AX4N is a pretty stout trans. I've had a lot of experience with the AX4S and wasn't expecting much when I got my 2003 Taurus. I have to say I've been very impressed with it! I bought it with a "bad trans" so I did a lot of researching before I pulled it apart. There are only 2 problems these transmissions are known for, most common being the torque converter drive strips requiring a reman converter. This is what mine needed. Next is a valve (iirc) that acts up on the VB. I looked into replacing this part but it seemed a reman VB was the best choice to make sure you didn't have to pull the trans apart twice... :)

I agree with what Chris said though, I would check the level with the car/trans at operating temp on a flat surface first. Good luck!
