Are you speaking of the limited-slip differential or the ring and pinion gear?

I didn't know that Auburn made the gear sets but they do make a differential.

Either way or both, I don't think it really matters until you start getting ridiculous in power.

using ford gears and a ford limited slip will make the install easier for who ever does it. The gears and limited slip will be machined to the specific dimensions and tolerances to fit Ford housings. I have no facts to back this up, but it seems that you see less people posting complaints about noises and such when they use the Ford parts. When you start using the non-Ford parts with the aluminum IRS housings it seems that it requires greater skill and knowledge to get the set-up right.

As JP said, I do not think it matters from a reliability perspective until you have high HP engines and drag race allot. Think about it, all those high HP stangs have Ford Racing gears from the factory.

FRPP gears. A few years ago there were FRPP 4.10A and 4.10M (M being Motive reboxed in Ford boxes and those howled.) Always FRPP gears and if they are older maker sure the part number ends with an 'A'.

Like beerdog says, some gears are easier to set up then others. I've got ford racing in mine.

The set-up advantage to using the Ford gears is that all the Ford Rotunda tools for setting backlash, pinion depth, load, etc are designed specifically to work with only ford gears and Ford housings. The tools make it very easy to set-up the differential. The tools are useless with non-ford gears. That is where the experience and knowledge comes into play. some of the gear makers sell tools but a shop may not want to buy the tools for every gear and housing combo so they just wing it.
