Broken brace behind rear seat

I took the rear seat out of my green 94 today to take 8 tires and wheels to the tire store. :)

I noticed a rattle in the back, it turned out to be the broken brace. I remember seeing this before, I need to get this welded up.

I remember hearing of this happening to a few Mark VIII's before.

so in case you were ever in doubt about how much this chassis flexes lol.

my 94 broke too. pretty flimsy stuff back there. I found out and drilled holes and added some tubing via bolts/nuts.
my 98 had bracing installed from shock tower to shock tower.

That's why I was OK with adding 50 lbs of bracing to mine, so much flex.

My car rides so much smoother now.

Years back I had that happen to my 95 years ago. I just took out the back seat and did a quick repair. I just got some 6 inch wide and 1/8 or 1/4 aluminum stock (can't remember) and cut it about a foot long, then put it over the crack, drilled some holes just slightly undersized for the bolts to get a very snug fit, and put 6 or so 1/4 bolts. It was nice and tight after that.

If the Gen1 has enough flex to break that cross brace I wonder what my '90 SC is doing back there!? :eek-large: Since my car has leather seats, they fold down (cloth ones didn't) so I have no cross bracing back there. Always 'funny' taking an MN-12/FN-10 up a driveway apron on an angle... dat flex! LOL
