CREMPF's Trans-axle

About 100K miles ago, we had trans-axle problems with CREMPF. Under the computer, it dropped error code 1744 – TRANS SLIP. According to the tech, the tranny fluid was burnt up.

So we R&R the tranny.

Now that we are about to visit family and friends in Ohio and Kanas next week, we have been feeling the car start to do the same thing it did before.
The car can be driven at 42 and held in the transition area between coasting and powered. The tranny seems to switch between gears. It’s like a misfire. The symptoms will go away when in 3rd gear. But OD, it’s there.

We took it to a LM dealer and they ran a computer check and test drove it. They were unable to duplicate the symptoms. It threw no codes. We told them to do a back flush and replace the tranny fluid with new Mercon V. The old fluid was not bad.

Any thought? We’ve already decided to use a rental car for the trip, because the wife and I do not trust the car make the trip without a tranny failure out of state.

I dealt with a failing fuel pump once that felt *very* much like a failing transmission. Enough that one shop was already quoting a rebuild before I figured it out. If you have a fuel pressure gauge, I'd give it a shot.

maybe check the fuel filter as well

Well if it's anything like the other trans shop rebuilds I've seen in my lifetime they always seem to fail about 1 year later. This is why without ever even seeing the inside of an auto trans I decided to "rebuild" the 4R70W in my 94 T-bird before wasting money at a trans shop. It came out good and next up is the 210K mile trans out of my 95 Taurus.

Good luck to you, I can't really diag auto transmissions but I wouldn't be shocked if it was a bad rebuild. :(

I've replaced the fuel pump and the filter twice. The first one had low pressure. The replacement pump had less than nominal running pressure and a non-existent back flow valve. The new one has "almost to OEM" specifications pressure and no back flow valve action. These were Metech pumps! I'm kind of tired of replacing pumps...

My argument to the wife about a fuel pump issues is that the problem does not happen at WOT, but at the coast/acceleration transition. I argued that a fuel pump issue would really stand out under WOT.

The trans-axle was R&R by a LM Dealer. But who knows where they got the replacement.

Well in that case it should have been an FQR unit with a 3 year 36K mile warranty but sometimes dealers send work out to local shops. Not sure if the warranty is the same on the units they send out. Either way the FQR units are hit or miss some are great and some are big POS with a 3 year warranty :D

BTW: A trans-axle is only in FWD cars since the trans and axle are one unit. You have a transmission.

Is not the '02 Continental FWD???
No way mine is RWD :D

I totally didn't notice this was a Continental thread not a Mark one.

I apologize for my mistake HOTLNC, the AX4N is a pretty decent trans-axle I just had one apart in my '03 Taurus a couple months ago and did a lot of research on them beforehand. Most issues they have can be solved by a reman valvebody. From what I read they are pretty solid internally.

No problem.

Is the symptoms typical of a valve body crying for replacement? Can a valve body R&R be done in the car under a shade tree?

I need glasses worse than I thought. It looked like you found out Cremepuff was a transsexual. Sorry, can't provide any help.

Hmmm, not from what I read but honestly I was looking into a complete failure of forward and reverse gears. These transmissions are known for the fluid pump and or torque convertor drive failing or a pressure valve getting stuck in the valve body. If I come across anything else I'll let you know.
