First nitrous runs at the track

The rain finally let up enough in New England for the track to open for the first time in 2 weeks, but it just wasn't dry. The conditions were as bad as I'd even seen them at New England Dragway and everyone's results were the same.

After half a dozen passes with the 125 shot the best I could do was 13.53 @ 107.8mph. This was babying the car off the line just to avoid going sideways and not even using the nitrous until after the 60' mark. I'm a little dissapointed with the nitto drag radials because the best 60' of the night was 2.38 and I'd done 2.1 multiple times with my regular street tires. No combination of long or short burnouts would make them do anything but spin off the line.

Oh well, I can see by the trap speed the potential is there. If I could just hook up enough to get a 1.9 60' that right there would put me in the 12s. I guess I'll have to wait for the track conditions to improve over the summer.

I did happen to line up with an '05 Mustang GT and just beat his 13.6 with a 13.55, so that was a highlight.

Bad track conditions or not, a 13.53 @ 107.8mph is doing the Lincoln proud. :)

I agree with your 60 foot time corollary. It seems to me track conditions dictate a large portion of the results in the first 60 feet. I've seen 125 shots on a 4.6L MN12 yield consistent 1.9s in the 60 foot on street tires!

In my experience with the Nittos, I find little difference in short to long burnouts contributing to traction. I find more positive results in adjusting the tire pressure - if you can get enough consistent runs in to home in on the sweet spot. This seems to vary from track to track. In doing so, I'll key in on the 60 foot time and lower the tire pressure in small increments starting at about 20 psi. Keeping the burnout/launch routine consistent, I'll look at the contact edge on the tire and the 60 foot time to find an optimum pressure setting. Even at that, the best I can muster is fairly consistent 2.1s since the Nittos compared to an occasional 2.1 on street tires.

You just wait until the track conditions improve, and I'm sure you'll be pleased with the results. Run often and be sure to tell us all about it. :D

I tried my BFG Drag Radials at 24 psi and did at least two runs then lowered the pressure 2 psi at a time all the way down to 12 psi. My best 60' times were at 20 psi. My best 60' so far is 2.033 but most are in the 2.1's.

I do not think you are getting the radials hot enough. You need to get in the box, burn out in first then shift into second until you get a fair amount of smoke comming from those tires.

I too found the nitto's at 18-20psi worked the best on the heavier lincoln. A lot of folks will tell you to run 10-15psi, but that is too low on a heavier car, but perfect on a light fox body.

On a sticky track like atco, englishtown, or norwalk you should be able to cut a 1.80 or lower if you spray a 125 off the line. On a greener track get out of the hole and spray it right when the front of the car is even with the tree to get the best 60ft. On a green track a 2.0 should be no problem.

Best run I had with a 125 was 12.6 @ 111.57 with a 1.96 short time if i remember correctly. I was always in the 12.7-12.9 @ 110-112mph. Even on humid days the car would run a mid 110. That is the only beauty to nitrous cars. You always have atmosphere in a bottle. You can really gain some ground on the sc/turbo cars when it gets warm.
Have fun and be safe!!

with my nittos without spray i got short times in the 1.9's. don't recall the hundredths.

i never took my nittos below 20 psi. usually 22-24 at the strip. didn't even do a burnout, just spun them enough to clean them off.

of course, track conditions vary greatly. those 1.9's with no burnouts happened at ubly, where they do excellent track prep and have a concrete launch pad in good condition with lots of VHT. at lapeer it's a totally different story.
