Help Please - 2000 TC Engine Problem

I think the best you could do would be a leak down test.

The lash adjusters should 'collapse' but you may want to soak them in some Marvel Mystery oil.

As far as the damaged followers, it's anyone's guess?

I wouldn't waste your time, I'm still for the engine change option. By the time you spend money on tools and parts you can have the entire engine swapped out.

I know that your engine deal fell through but there are millions of these things out there.

At this point it's personal. I'm learning SO much about these motors (was a pushrod kinda guy before this TC) and I'm loving it. I want to see those piston tops and if they're good a good head and timing parts are going on it and I'm betting it purrs. Definite piston impact. I got the followers out of a bone yard car and installed the first one. I didn't get full rotation before clunk and stopped cold. I noticed that when the lobe isn't making contact and depressing the follower that it wobbled. I removed it and compared the intake and exhaust valves 'heights' and the ones that seem to have hit are all slightly 'shorter' than the others. The head must come off but that's going to be delayed because of the weather. Also I got the other valve cover lifted (I believe that taking all cam cover bolts out and propping the covers up and away from the timing cover allows for timing inspection and maint. without having to mess with the evap or brake booster) and after putting the damper timing mark on point can see a definite difference between the cam gear marks on both sides. I can also see down the cover on the left (drivers) side and the guide is worn badly. I can't see the right side guide but I expect to see it fully broken which caused the chain to jump. The saga continues. Pics coming as I get the cover off and have a look at the guides.

Your determination is impressive. Thanks for the update! It sounds like you have a very good attitude about this.

I have made some great headway on this thing. I got the head off and like we all expected the valves were bent, all 4 intake valves, but the pistons were not busted. I got 4 new valves installed and I have the head back on the car. I'm doing (trying) to do the timing now. I had good timing hardware on the side that failed and destroyed timing parts on the side still working. I can't explain this engine except that it's all back together with good pieces now. I laid the chains out and marked the end links as I had read to do. I put the marks on the crank and then turned the cams till the other painted link was on its cam mark also. I did this for both chains. When done everything seemed correct. I had the followers out and rotated the crank till the #1 intake lobe was pointed up to snap the follower in. It went in no problem but when I rotated it hit the piston. This is my first time doing timing on these motors so I'm obviously going to need help with it. If one of you would please give me the step by step I would greatly appreciate it. Phone is at 2% so I will upload the pics I have next post. Thanks in advance.

Tried everything and it still isn't timed right. Even put the cover and harmonic balancer on and put it on TDC. When the #1 is at the top and the chain marks on the intake lobe points pretty much straight down. Once the timings right I have only a couple hours before key turn. As promised here are some pics. If you have a weak stomach...sorry.
.
It said I exceeded a file size limit. I'll try again next post.

Guys I have been all over creation trying to get this thing timed. I know the procedure, heck it's practically idiot proof. It's still not right and I don't know why. Keyway at 10, timing marks at 6, that's TDC... I see this stuff in my sleep. Chains marked correctly. Cam sprockets on mark...............but that intake valve lobe is pointing straight down and that's causing (caused) the pistons to hit my Bank 1 intake valves! Helllllllllllp!

Guys this engine needs to die. Found a broken cam sprocket on the right side while trying to figure out why the valves are not in the right place when the timing marks are all aligned. That video was a great help. It showed intake and exhaust lobe location at TDC and this cam, when lobes are there, shows 180 off, the cam gear marks are exactly at the bottom, the reverse of what they should be at top. I'm honestly fed up with it. There was some parts swapped at some point with a new head gasket and who knows (who does know?) what this thing is built out of at this point. All that said the engine should just be swapped. I don't really regtret it since I learned so much about the engines but I kinda wish I would have swapped it at at the beginning. What years can I use? Are all 4.6 1999 and up engines the same? I still have all these parts so if something isn't interchancable with a 2007 for example I could swap parts around.

You'll have to swap intakes/manifolds and what not but look on www.car-part.com and search for newer model years. Should be able to find a nice low milage one for $400.

Sorry about the troubles but like you said "learned so much about the engines" . Nothing is a failure, just a learning experience, I've had plenty as well.

Thanks Eric that's exactly how it feels. I'm still so stumped on this timing issue. Everything went together so smoothly, minus the huge chunk of my knuckle that got sliced off, and I expected it to be a done deal. This timing situation has been a nightmare. Is there a max year I shouldn't exceed? I see many 06 07 08 but don't want to buy the wrong one. This engine is going to be the last money that can be spent on this car so it's gotta work. Thanks much I appreciate it.

Performance usually came from the aluminum drive shafts and better exhaust. I think just about any 4.6 SOHC after 2000 was a PI 4.6 (better intake and heads) so you definitely want to shoot for that.

Short answer is yes that one should be a higher output and you can use it (with some minor part swapping)
