High outside temperature causes faint fuel odor, and reluctance to start.

Had similar problems on my jeep with smell, starting, and filling up. Ended up being a combination of evap charcoal canister and stuck purge valve in gas tank.

Some people call it a vents valve, too I guess. http://www.jeepsunlimited.com/forums/showthread.php?515916-Trouble-filling-gas-tank-(venting)

Anyway, I had the same starting symptoms as you as well as the difference in severity with temp.

Was this issue ever solved Mike?

I ask because it's getting hot out and I'm getting very strong fuel vapor odor in the cabin (more so when the AC is on).

Seems to have gotten stronger as the tank nears empty, could it be the solenoid or are the canisters needing to be replaced?

In a word, Nope. :)

But I'm like 90% that it's that valve located in the upper-right quadrant of the pic of the emissions tray about 3 replies up. I just never bothered replacing it.

So I took The Mark out for a ride this weekend, and it was a hot one here in ATL. I had the windows down, and the fumes were ripe for sure. Anyone have the Motorcraft part number to replace this valve and hoses on a 98? A close-up photo of the part would be great!

Rock Auto has the best price for a motorcraft one. I ordered one and will update when it's installed. For now I just keep her topped off.

Got it installed, it's in the passenger fender, behind the splash guards, bolted next to the upper door hinge. It wasn't a terrible job, about an hour if prepared.

I changed the fuel filter as long as I was in there. Also changed out my EVAP tray, spark plugs, cleaned the IAC and found a vacuum leak. Unfortunately it didn't fix my high idle issue.

So I went out and put about 50 miles on the car with half a tank but it's to early and cool out to tell if it worked. I will have to update when MN gets another heat wave.

Yes, it seems to of improved slightly (but that might be a placebo effect). Jason was going to help with the tune but he's busy and hasn't gotten to it yet.

I wasn't expecting anything I did to help with that, but figured a little maintenance wouldn't hurt. I did remove allot of carbon from the IAC.

Those tune adjustments are all that's needed.

Haven't run the car down to empty on a hot day yet but the results so far are good.

A little pricey of a part but it's easy to change so I feel it's worth doing on most of these cars. I'll update if it ever comes back.

Finally getting around to doing the Vapor Canister Purge Valve / Solenoid MOTORCRAFT CX1687 - ordered from Rock Auto today. Had The Mark out this past Saturday, and the fumes reminded me to fix this asap! lol :)

I was just thinking about this thread...

I got the car ready for a long, hot trip I'm taking soon and will be using the A/C a lot. Since installing the valve I haven't had an opportunity to drive the car with the AC on... you know, that whole never ending winter thing.

Sidenote: Got the tune and I still have a high idle until I stop rolling.
