Inside Rear View Mirror

Received the mirror on Monday. Plugged in the 8 pin connector on the back, slid it down until it clicked, and it all works just like new. I'd definitely recommend them for repairs as they say they do all makes and models.

Reviving an Old Thread

Hi all, new to this forum. Hope it's ok to join by revisiting an old thread!

I have a '99 Continental, that was originally equipped with the 8 pin Donnelly mirror. It developed a leak. I understand that the later, 7 pin Gentex mirror can be used, it just requires the correct connector and a change in pin placement. I already have the correct Gentex mirror, for an '01 Continental w/o sunroof, so no lights in the mirror body. There is an ebay seller who states he will sell you a mirror, and has instructions for accurate rewiring. My emails to him offering to pay for the instructions have gone un-answered. I would REALLY like to get the auto dim functionality back, and even the compass since it is there. Can anyone help?

THanks!

Same spot as ChiefRider, 99 Cont with the leaky Donnelly mirror. Most of the Continental stayed the same between 99/02, not the mirror which went to Gentex as a source. I've been told to make sure any replacement comes from a Ford as (what I've been told) the internals are different even with the same GNTX number. I was also told to get a GNTX 221, again from a Ford vehicle and I have ordered one. Caution on the newer mirrors is that they may not support dimming the headlights, not an issue for me.

I am wondering what the source is for the wiring diagrams earlier in the thread, as I am betting 97 will not be the same as 1999 or 2000 to 2002.

Thanks

Helms is the factory supplier of manuals. You can often find them on eBay. The diagrams posted were likely from the DVD version of the FLM manuals of the time which covered many models of specific years.

I've got the CD from Ford (kinda weak as I recall) and the big blue phone book sized two volume set for the 1999 Cont, 5" thick of assuming you are a Ford line mechanic, but has about everything.

I checked my old mirror last night, its 8 pin, but I only count 6 wires going into it, so the new 7 pin "should be fine". I found a NOS GNTX in the Ford parts box on ebay, and also bought a 7 pin pigtail for the pin holder. Maybe this weekend I can dig into it more.

I'll try to get some picts and post what I find.

Thanks.

That sounds promising. It's surprising how many Continental owners have discovered our forum while troubleshooting this issue. It must be relatively common.

and here I thought it was just my Mark VIII with the oddball 2-year-only parts!
