Inside Rear View Mirror

Hi, all...

Have a 1998 Lincoln Continental....
The rear view mirror is undergoing what, I believe, is called "flaxing" in the Autodim....
It has autodim, compass and map lights, with an 8 prong plug...and 3 buttons on the underside, 2 for the lights (which work) and one for the autodim, I guess (which does not work)....
I would like to replace it....
The back of the mirror has a large circle with an E8 inside it and the number 012017.....with the name Donnelly...
Any help on a proper replacement, please???

Thanks

Hey, thanks for the response.....

You are right...dealer is insane....and parts are coming out of the ears on EBay...problem is, they all have 7 prong connection....for some ridiculous reason, mine is wired with 8....

Would you happen to know who would have this part with 8 prong harness???

By the way, great looking cat!!!!!!

I ONLY show a 8 prong....not sure why they are 7 prong unless yours is from a different year? Maybe your car is a late 97 production model?

Like I though.......7 prong is a 1997 model.

You just need to find a seller that has a 1998-2001 model.

Lol! No problem, it just seems to be one of those parts, the ones that you order 3 times until you find the right one.

I realize this thread ran about a year ago, but I'm in the same boat now. Replacing my '98 mirror with one from an '01. The '98 has the 8-pin coinnector, and the '01 has a 7-pin.

I saw the wiring diagram above and am wondering if it is the same one for an '01 mirror?? If so, you have just made my life MUCH easier.

Only thing is - my car doesn't have a LG/O wire in the 8-pin socket. (The "new" mirror I have has map lights, the old one from my car doesn't.) There are only 6 wires in the 8-pin plug. Will I still be able to wire this new mirror to at least get the compass and auto-dim featuress going again??

Thanks!
Mark

Welcome! :)

You would need to compare the wiring diagrams to answer your question.
Thanks. I love my Continental, but this mirror thing is driving me nuts.

I understand that I need to compare the proper diagrams... What I was asking was if the wiring diagram in this thread for the 7-pin connector is the same as the one for an '01... if it is, I can work from there.

Can anyone answer that for me, or can someone supply a proper wiring diagram for the '01 mirror?

Again, thanks!
Mark

Can anyone verify that the 7-wire diagram shown earlier in this thread is for the 2001 mirror wiring? PLEASE????

In any event, my '98 mirror does not have a LG/O wire, so if I am able to get this '01 mirror wired, I need to find a suitable source for that wire - since it has map lights and my '98 did not.

Anyone?? Thanks!

As the '98 did NOT have map lights to start with, you would need to run a hot wire from the fuse block and run it through a switch to power the map lights on the mirror....

At least that what it sounds like to me....flip switch to turn on map lights.

Sorry to dig up such and old thread but did you ever find one Jack? I need the exact same mirror but all I can seem to find have only 7pins. I located two with 8pins but there were a completely different style w/o maplights. WTH  Who designed these things?

Welcome, Sumer!

So have you already gotten your hands on a 7-pin version? and if so, does it have the same features? I'd be tempted to say it could be adapted or re-pinned to fit. The map lights, and auto-dim I would think both use just a simple +12v. (in theory, they could share one.) that leaves the other pins for the compass, which if memory serves is an external module. That would be the tricky part. Wost-case scenario would be that you would have to go without the compass, but I think I personally would miss it.

Your are probably right but the thing is that its not mine. Its for one of my customers. They are willing to pay the $$$ I just need to find the part. I would prefer to not have to modify something if I can help it. Never seen anything like this. I have found mirrors that look exactly the same but with only 7pins and I have found different style with 8pins and no map lights. Any one have a clue how to configure a 7pin mirror to an 8pin plug?

I understand. If I were doing this for a customer, I'd be hesitant to attempt modifications myself as well.

I'm afraid I may not be of much further assistance though. Neither my '97 Mark VIII nor my '99 Town Car have the compass or map lights integrated into the mirror itself, so anything else would be a guess.

Well, this is interesting. on a whim, I typed in "lincoln rear view mirror 8-pin" on ebay, and got a few hits that at first glance appear to be correct. Although I cannot vouch for the seller or the quality of the part, the prices appear low enough to take the chance.

Already checked all those. Ones like that are what I was referring to in an earlier post. They are a different shape and style plus they do not have maplights. WTF

Thanks for trying to help though. I do appreciate it.

replace or repair?

The auto dimming mirror in my 1998 Continental just went out. I looked on eBay for a mirror for a while but then I found a website: www.radar-mirror.com that will repair the mirror for $99 with a warranty. It just seems to me that having to rewire it, or other make other modifications wouldn't be worth it. At least I know that what I get back will go back in with little effort. I'll let you all know how it comes out.

So far so good. They got the mirror in on Thursday and shipped it back the same day. Can't wait to see how it turned out.
