Keys, Keyless Entry Code and Remotes

I just bought my first Lincoln which is a 2005 Town Car. It came with one key, no remotes and no code for the keyless entry pad. I've read that two working keys are required to program the chip in a new key. Then, I've read where it can be done with just one. Which is correct? I've looked in the trunk for the keypad code and there's nothing on the right hinge. I've attached a photo of the sticker on the door computer but nothing there seems to work on the keypad. Lastly, are the remotes on eBay being sold as replacements any good?

Thanks for any advice.

a VCM or similar unit can add keys from nothing.
you need 2 keys to add more keys without a VCM.

ford stopped putting the door code on the hinge somewhere in the late 90s.

the keypad code for that box is listed on the sticker. should be 13975.

Welcome, Joe!

Although I have read repeatedly that two keys are required, I've never read the manual on it to know if there is a work-around. On my own '99 Town Car, I've just always lived with one key. Since you have the keypad mine lacks, I'd feel pretty confident about it. (I did manage to lock my own key in the trunk once, which was a problem you won't have with the keypad)

I think the ebay remotes are probably just fine, but on any car with the keypad, I'd never carry the remote anyway.. Ask anyone here, I'm strange like that. :)

Chris,

That code worked!! Thanks so much! How did you get that code from the sticker? I don't see 13975 anywhere. Also, please educate me, what is a VCM?

I'm a car guy but as far away from Lincolns as you can get. I restore old MG's (just finishing a '59 right now) so I know my way around the garage. I spend a lot of time on an MG forum site that has proved to be a wealth of information. I can see the Lincolns of Distinction site is going to be great also.

Thanks for all the replies!!!

The code was in that row of numbers on the top line of your sticker. :)

It could just have easily been "24086," for example. The sticker shows both digits that are printed on each key..

In other news, I think you might be our third MG enthusiast, so we're going to need pictures of that thing, asap.

You know, I read the first couple of numbers - 1/2 3/4 and didn't go any further thinking it's just the numbers as they appear on the door. I bought this car from an estate and for some reason there was only one key, no remotes, no manuals and the spare, jack, etc. is not with the car. Did this have a full size spare? Anything special about it - or the jack?

I've included a couple of photos of two of my MG's. The red one is a '65 MGB and the frame waiting for the body to go back on is a '59 MGA.DSC_0772-001.jpg

Ooh. that's a good lookin' car, right there..

Re: your spare. My only reference here is my own '99 Town Car, but it has an aluminum rim mini-spare in the trunk, along with a pretty typical looking scissor jack. If the Jack has a "place" in the trunk, I've never found it. I just have it tucked back behind the spare so it doesn't rattle around too much.

I think the wheel offset changed in '03-04, but I'm not so sure that would have impacted the spare tire. I'll bet you could salvage one out of most any 98+ town car, Grand Marquis, or Crown Victoria and have some peace of mind. I can think of a few members here who would know for sure if this advice is incorrect.. Perhaps they'll chime in too.

Our '06 Town Car has a typical mini-spare tucked away under a cover in the fender well area of the passenger side of the trunk. If I remember correctly, the jack and handle attach to the wheel/tire assembly.

Could have been. Even my '99 has two places to put the "hook" that secures the spare on the shelf in the trunk. One for a full size, one for a compact.

My '86 had the full size. (and both tie-down points, also.)

These cars really didn't change a whole lot... :)
