Keys

Tonight I checked the ignition keys for door entry. No fit.

I don't have the original door code and with only one remote working, I hope I don't get locked out.

Locksmith or dealer?

Crazy. makes me wonder if someone already tried to swap out the PATS.

Regardless, check the right-hand trunk hinge for a small white sticker. Ford liked to put it there for quite a number of years. Otherwise, the owner's manual and associated materials.

I believe the code will also be printed on the computer itself, but I'd have to do some creative googling to find out where that's located on a Continental.

Hopefully it's on the trunk hinge. I use the keypad exclusively on my car. I don't even carry the "remote" because the keypad is always "right there."

Thanks tixer. I'll send the oldest Grandson in there to get that soon. I spent some time trying to find the transceiver replacement part today without much luck. Me thinks I should just open it up, remove the connection and spray electronic parts cleaner (let it dry) and plug it back in. The transceiver obviously works, but intermittent problems make me think it needs cleaned.

It turns out that the keys work in the door and trunk.

Both were very stiff when I tried to rotate the 1st time and thought they weren't matching the locks but are smooth after a few stiff cycles. They were likely rarely used. The 17 year old grease must be distributed now.

The door code was in plain sight & I'll be able to change it now.

Thanks tixer!

Glad to hear they work and you don't need to get a new set of tumblers and keys. I use my keys in the door once a week or month just to be sure, and I rotate keys. Seems like overkill but no telling how many times the key has been turned in the ignition cylinder in 292,000 miles, first 16,000 it was a rental.

While you can add a personal code, you can't actually change the existing one. You can also set new personal codes that have a personality attached, or don't (so you can have a key code for driver 1 with mirrors and seat, and driver 2, etc, just like the key fob).

and I rotate keys.
Actually, I think this is a great idea. I should do this.

The keypad on these is actually quite feature rich. It's a section of the manual worth reading. I use the "extras" on the keypad all the time. (the command for the trunk.. last two keys to lock, etc.)

Also, On the Mark, and presumably on the Continental, two "twists" of the key in the passenger door will unlock the driver's door also. It's useful when you open the passenger door for your date, you can unlock the driver's door in the process.. :D

No key or key pad location on the passenger side. I got some new fob shells in the mail today so the old keys & fob guts are in/attached to the new fobs now.

Went to Ford dealer today and picked up a replacement PATS transceiver. I'll try to post some install info if I get a Round Tuit this weekend.

Woop.. I love this old car.
