Oil change overfill

This is about my ****ty Chevy oil change at the stealer. They sent me a flyer that said, oil, filter. and lube, $14.99. I pay extra for Mobil I, and extra qt. Great I also have a $50 gift card that they sent me awhile ago, and still valid. Sounds too good to be true, and it was. Flyer said 1 hour, well it was 2 1/4 hours. Second time they didn't lube it, I think because 2 skid pans have to come off to get at some fittings. "mechanic" wrote trans leak = not. He pulled the filter, and splashed oil all over both skid pans, oil all over, what a mess. 5 min ride home, and pic show mess in my driveway, one pic is where I park the truck, a few leftover spots from when the PS cooler rotted away. PU has 26547 miles and no leaks. The real bad is the level of the oil, twice what it should be. I know too much oil and oil pressure, will make stiff start leaking. Good; they gave me my gift card back, and it was no charge for the long wait. They are not aware of what I found yet. No call back as of this time. Have the letters, and pics ready to go to service mgr, gen mgr, president of this dealer chain, DMV, and BBB. Well time to fix their screw ups, of course they'll say bring it back, and they'll fix it. Sounded too good to be true, and it wasn't. I'll bring it back only if they let me have a brand new vette for the day.Dipstick overfill.jpgGengras leak wher I park.jpgGengras leak -3.jpgGengras leak-2.jpgGengras leak.jpg

Good luck
Guy I work with had an oil leek caused by the dealer. Dealer fixed the car and came out to clean the garage floor.

They brought it back, all is well, I'll check it in the am. They even washed it, and the next few oil changes are to be on the house.

Well, it sounds like they're working hard to "make things right," at least.

So how was the vette loaner.

Sounds like the filled it with new oil without draining the old oil.

I wonder if someone got fired or had to correct it on their own time.

They wouldn't give me a vette, somehow they knew when I brought it back, it would need new rear tires. They drained the oil, because it splashed all over. I asked if the oil change guys were from jiffy lube, they said younger guys wanting to become mechanics. Most likely 2 guys put oil in it. Another bump in life, and I hope it's over with. Truck only wants me to change the oil. Took it to a vavoline place once, and they put used oil in it. Amber color going in, black coming out. Idiots, or crooks one or the other.

Coming from someone who has spent almost 20 year in a dealership. Never have them touch your vehicle unless it is a warranty or a safety recall issue.
You got off easy. Ive seen TWO Chevy trucks fall off of lifts at a Chevrolet dealership for oil changes. They could give all the discounts and free oil changes and I still wouldn’t let them touch my stuff. Its just not you people are a glutton for punishment and keep going back.

I enjoy changing oil myself, just got too much stuff on my plate, and they did ok last time. Mostly it was a big waste of time for me. They know I'll be under the truck before I drive it.

I'm not going to defend them...at all. But, it seems they are doing what they should to fix a "human error".
I run an auto repair shop and I'll say this:
1)the EPA limits what solvents they can use to clean spilled oil and lets face it, those damn splash shields/skid plates are just a PITA to remove and re-install for a "1 hour oil change" so they tried to do it quickly, didn't remove them and gravity fed oil to the plates. it happens.
2) they probably pump oil from a 300 gallon pneumatic tank and use a metered dispenser that measures the oil flow rate. The calibration can be off (needs to be recalibrated every 1000 gallons) so they pump 6 quarts in(or whatever the capacity is for your vehicle) and the actual dispensed product was more. In this case, you asked for Mobil 1 oil so they had to open each quart or 1 gallon jug to hand-pour it in using some plastic tool they invented before your grandpa was even born...it's called a "funnel" and those gadgets are hardly used at oil change stations anymore...he probably spilled half of the jug out of the funnel down the engine, didn't know how much he lost, had a service manager screaming to get it done quickly because the impatient customer is bending his ear at how long this simple, NO PROFIT job is taking. "the coupon said_____" yada yada yada. so he just opened a new jug and poured in what he guessed he spilled.
3)they failed to use the "indicator" or "dip stick" which was the HUMAN ERROR part. This is what happens when they rush to meet a customer's promised time of completion
4)this is why we NEVER promise a completion time for a simple oil change. The lube-tech is pressured to get the job done in an hour....ever try to make a 5 course meal in an allotted amount of time? things can go wrong, and the snowball effect kicks in
5) It's obvious you had a discount coupon which means they were losing money on a job they dont make money on anyway...no shop makes money on an oil change...ever....they just do them for the opportunity to open your hood and find other things to SELL you.

The dealership did you wrong. I get it. But you laid all the cards in place for them to fail the moment you took your NEW low-mile vehicle in, with a coupon, a time limit, and then wanted special oil (other than the advertised coupon oil) and they screwed up.

Guess what? they did themselves a favor. They'll clean up the mess, and hopefully never have to service "that cheap customer" again.

BTW...all of this is in fun...but seriously...you brought most of it on by taking your beloved vehicle to A DEALERSHIP for a CHEAP oil change.

(hope you know I'm just toying with ya)

No problem. I know the chance I was taken going to a stealer. I worked for a dealer back in the 60's. A 4 speed trans disappeared, and they were going to have an inspection, and gave a 2 day notice. I, and many people saw the tune up guy fill his trunk with new tune up stuff, plugs, wires, air filters etc. All the customers that paid for all that stuff, had no idea.
When I was looking to buy a pu, this dealer had a nice F-150, 4X4, extended cab, loaded, 100K miles. They wanted $22K, and with checkbook in hand I offered $20K. Glad they said no. The next day a guy had a pu that he thought was sold, and he called me, the deal didn't happen. Got him down to $18,500,and he delivered it. It's not a Ford, but it's a 1 ton, 4X4, ls with 5k miles. A new truck. I like to go to that dealer and tell this story, and they keep wanting to buy it. Their best offer so far was $19,400. It's a 2004, with 26K. Every now and then they have a drawing for $5,000. Just for stopping they give you a $10 gift card. Shortly after that they send you a $50 gift card only for their store. They messed up, made it right, and we move on. Last time it cost me $7 for an oil change. This time I even got my $50 gift card back. A minor hump in the road, I've been over much larger humps.

glad you saw I was kidding(read the whole thing).
I too would go to that dealer since they almost seem to treat YOU as if they are a smaller shop(a bit more personal).
Nice job T-man
We have made plenty of mistakes through the years and have gone above and beyond to rectify them...I'd say over 90% of our customers are lifetime customers and of the 10% of NEW customers, 90% of them become repeat customers because our reputation is what keeps us busy when 3 of the 5 shops in town have closed their doors.
We get it. I get it. I make sure my whole crew gets it.
They say it's pretty hard to screw up an oil change. I guess whoever says that hasn't had to change oil on hundreds of different kinds of vehicles. Try to do that, error-free...all day long. Sometimes even a master chef over-cooks a meal. It's how he handles the situation afterwords that makes him a great Chef.
