Split Catalytic Converter

My black 94 Mark VIII exhaust started getting loud all of a sudden on the way home from work.

I put the car on the tilt lift, and found the leak is coming from the passenger side cat, the upper seam where it is welded together. The whole seam is leaking, like all the welds broke loose. The car still runs great, it's just louder.

Anyone else see this before?

I've always been impressed with how long these stock exhaust systems last (I've never had to replace a pipe or muffler on one of these cars yet).:)

My 97 passenger side Cat had a split in it. I lost an injector it was dumping fuel into the cylinder. Got so hot the cat was Orange i grabbed the hose to cool it off. Duh it split wide open. It was and excuse for me to put the Cobra Manifolds on and go with a true dual exhaust.

High quality american steel. All of these aftermarket exhausts are made from low quality Chinese steel.

I took the car to master exhaust welder Jeremi yesterday.

We pulled the exhaust off and when he took off the heat shield, we found that it was a rust hole. The heat shield just channeled the exhaust out by the seam, that's why I thought the seam was split.

He ground it all down and welded a patch made from a piece of stainless exhaust pipe he had.

He did an excellent job, especially considering how rusty the cat is. It's nice and quiet again.

Thanks again Jeremi!

That patch is way to nice for the rest of that cat. Did you have a BBQ after?
The rest of the cat wasn't that bad, I don't know what caused the rust hole there, my winter beaters never had that.

Yes, the bar be que was great.:)
