What Amp Should I Get?

Thanks, Mike! :) Everything - 2-12's, amp, custom sealed sub box, wiring, both sides amp covers, wall, carpet $1200.

lol This thread started with me buying the 2 subs and ported box for $69 bucks.

I am done with this car. For now... :)

that really does look like a million bucks. You'd have to be a Mark VIII owner to know that isn't stock. Enjoy!

Update - Before SSHS13, I had The Mark in for service at Aric's shop. The stereo system was working great when I dropped the car off, but when I took delivery the Friday night before the shootout, I no longer had "bump" :frown:.

Mike (Tixer) and I tried to see if there was a fuse or wire loose at the track, but it was decided during the shootout is not the time or place to be trying to figure it out. Thanks again Mike, for the help! :)

I had dropped The Mark off at Aric's this past Wednesday, for them to take back their fuel rail pressure gauge quick release, and to see if the sub amp could be saved. Ryan has background as a stereo installer, and he said there was power up to the amp, and the remote switch from the head unit was working. He also pinged the subs, and they were fine also. His conclusion was the amp is dead.

I picked The Mark up yesterday before lunch, and took it back to the stereo shop that did the install. They did the same tests, and came to the same conclusion.

This shop sells JL & Memphis as their high end stuff, and wanted to sell me a very nice JL 1000 watt amp, that honestly, would be more show than anything, since I do not go to sound competitions, or try to shake the earth with bass.

They had a display set-up of Sony gear. The amp is a GS series Class-D Subwoofer Amplifier XM-GS100. I asked the installer if that would work with the two 12's in the trunk, and he said yes. Better yet, this amp has a 3 year warranty :)

So for $243 out the door (free installation), The Mark has bump again :)

Sorry to hear that the old Amp kicked the bucket, but this one looks like a good replacement. The power should be a good match for those subs, and it is (in my opinion,) cosmetically attractive. :) a 3 year warranty is tough to beat, too. I didn't know anyone did that anymore.. Did it fit well where the old amp was? or did they have to modify the "window?"

I gave the Kicker amp to Emily's friend. He is going to see what killed it. The stereo shop thinks a voltage spike.

I have never had problems with a Sony power supply on any of their products, so that weighed in, along with the 3 year warranty when I decided to buy it.

There is no doubt, the Sony does not hit as hard as the Kicker. But again, I do not play the music that loud to notice the difference.

The Sony amp has a much smaller footprint than the Kicker. I did not have time for the shop to make a new cover on a Saturday afternoon, so when I have time, for $85, they will make it look like the Kicker when you take the cover off.

Boo... :( Better to have some bass than no bass though.

Let us know how the amp-autopsy goes. that sounds like something I'd do. :D

lol Not entirely boo. Compare it like 5 sticks of dynamite going off instead of 10 sticks :)

I sure will post the autopsy results. Adam said he was going to look for the obvious carnage first, and if it all looks good, he has a friend that can dig in deeper.

Where exactly is that "window"?

And what airflow is there around the amp? Forced induction (LOL)? More often than not, it is heat that kills amplifiers.

The stereo shop built the amp box, and they believe there is ample cooling inside with the cover on, based on my listening habits (how hard the amp has to work). lol there are no fans, intercooler, etc. inside the box. :) I leave the "window" open most of the time anyway.

Since the KB BAP debacle, the new BAP is mounted on top of the box that was made for it on the passenger side. I do believe the BAP failure was heat related, as that is wired to put out 17.1 volts all the time, so it never gets a break.

Looks good, I just don't understand why they used that color carpet.

An amp with that small of a footprint should've/could've been tucked it away somewhere for a cleaner look, unless that's how you wanted it. Honestly, if the carpet were correct I don't think i'd have a problem with it.

Trying not to be critical, just my .02.

Glad to hear you could almost tolerate it! :)
