It's tied to how many posts you have, not membership duration.

Post some pictures of your projects, tell us some cool things you have done with a mark, write up a Tech Article, etc...... Your post count will build and "Newbie" will eventually go away. We like contributors more than lurkers.

If you really do not like it you can change it in you're user settings.
