Upset at times...need tranny and TC!

I think im going to need tourque converter now, and of course a bulletproof tranny.
Took the car to our 1/8 mile track here in FL.
Not understanding why i did so bad compared to my other engine. Not sure if my tires were spinning, or my tranny is slipping. Anyways here is the best slip from yesterday at test and tune.
Reaction:--- +.384
60ft --- 2.181
330 ft --- 5.955
ET @ 594ft - 8.389
1/8th ET --- 9.014
1/8MPH --- 80.35

I know this car has 8's in it. Last year with the stock mark 8 engine i did 9.002 on street tires. Now im packing an extra 100HP and times r worse! hmmmm fishy stuff going on. The 2002 SVT Cobra engine dynoed out at 291 to the rear wheels, and 375 foot pounds of tourque in this car on dyno. Im lost guys..
Also let me know who "really" has the bulletproof trannys these days. Remember the tranny war on here a while back. I dont wanna start another one, just get a kick butt tranny and tourque conv. I can bolt in and forget about.

RE: Upset at times...need tranny and TC!

Looks like nice times to me. :)

I suggest you study the long term trend vs. the one time comparison. That's one of the biggest lessons I've learned in this hobby. You can look at sixty foot times at the same track for certain aspects related to torque output, but I suspect your complaint is more HP related than torque related.

Regardless, to me the 9.0x at 80mph in the 1/8 mile is nothing to sneer at, but I can understand your frustration with the times comparison. I know last fall my car had more potential than in the spring but alas I could not find the track conditions to make it show on the time slips.

I can't help with the tranny, but I've researched the torque converter. IMHO, it comes down to PI and Edge. Both seem to recommend fairly conservative stall settings however.

RE: Upset at times...need tranny and TC!

(wonders)
if the intake manifold designed for a lightweight stick shift car.. installed in a heavyweight auto matic car.. MIGHT be "A" contributing factor.

The diff between a 9.002 and a 9.014 could be attributed to a different weather conditions.

Humidity could easily make that much difference in passes made ONE DAY apart, and that's just humidity.
Toss in.. Air temp.. and Air density and you have more than enough variables to come up with "that much" ET difference.

It's been "said" around various boards that unless the Cobra motor is going to be supercharged, that the intake manifold from the Cobra isn't the best option for the Mark 8.

Maybe some adjusting of the IMRC's will help.. dunno.

{just some food for thought}

You can get a PI clone from Art Car for $200-$300 less than PI. It is a clone because it is machined and assembled from the same parts as a PI; it just isn't called a PI.

Dennis Reinhart had some serious issues sometime back, though now he says he gets his trannys from Art Car.

I would call Bill at www.supercoupeperformance.com. You'll get the same Art Car tranny at the same price, and Bill is much easier to work with.

I can say all this because I've bought a tranny from both.

RE: Upset at times...need tranny and TC!

IMHO, you're lacking traction. I had the same thing happen to me when installed 4.10 gears and exhaust. I was running worse times than pre mod. DRs solved that problem. Also, run in the 1/4. That intake is not helping your 60', especially since there are no IMRCs anymore.

Did you really put down 375 RWTQ ???

RE: Upset at times...need tranny and TC!

Wow, yes i havent thought of the intake yet, she does bog a little til i get to 2000 RPM. In wich case the PI covertor from ART will help. I plan on installing ET street's and a 125 shot when i get back from 6 month deployment. Thanks for the input guys, I was upset when im packing an extra 90HP and my times got worse. lol Also my reaction times used to be around 440 or 490 so ill have to relearn how the car loads up at start to pick when im launching. Thanks for the input guys.! Im already starting to collect parts for the tranny build when i get back. Can ART put the thing together or farm it out if i show up to his garage with a trannycase in my truck, and all the goodies to go inside?
I didnt think of it before, but maybee the guys dyno tuned it for max HP which i didnt care for that much. Im looking for max HP to the ground. Kind of like running a less radical cam and dual plane intake V.S a single plane intake in a big block for better throttle response. It hurts you in top end HP, but is actually better for response, and tourque.
Thanks for the input guys! It all will be considered when it comes time to light the credit card up again. Shes been sitting at zero bal and smoldering to burn from last go around with the swap lol.

RE: Upset at times...need tranny and TC!

Just went digging through the old paperwork and reciepts to find my dyno printout to see where it kicked in. Yes 375FT-lbs is a typo! I was going on memory wich stinks nowadays.

Sorry guys the exact numbers are:

291.5 HP @ 5500.0 RPM
317.5 Ft-Lbs @ 4500.0 RPM tourque

Im scanning my printout sheet to post here tonight after i find my link cable, or i can just pull the one off my printer to use. Anyways It will be up tonight. Maybe then someone will see the graph and can help better judge what i should do to get me closer to my goal. Thanks again for all the input!

RE: Upset at times...need tranny and TC!

Ok fellas, here is the dyno chart and two runs that i know the car will do better? with a new tranny. Im running the FMS 4:10's with an Eaton posi unit and stud kit, and Dennis's driveshaft. Also the tranny feels like its all flat stock, and granny shifting. It doesnt lock up on start and have deliberate crisp firm shifts like my programming with Dennis's chip used to be. Perhaps they left it flat when they reflashed my chip? Anyways, i like the way Dennis's chip was on the transmission, hard, firm, and crisp. The car feels sluggish and granny like again, if judging it by the transmission alone.
I like Dennis's programming alot better for the tranny. I'm running the biggest unit B&M cooler you can get and my 10,000 mile interval tranny fluid changes always came out reddish pink and healthy with no sparkles with Dennis's programming. I havent gone in for a new one since I got new engine in, but am definately curious as to what my problem could be.

RE: Upset at times...need tranny and TC!

Nope, its the 2001 SVT motor, with 6000 miles on it. The guy yanked it to build a drag car. Heres a somewhat latest pic, i havent done my carbon fiber intake tube yet, so don't laugh at the fabbed fiberlgass one in primer im runnning now. ;-) Also the fuel rails and lines havent been installed yet either...noooo time ..sad to say im wayy to busy nowadays. Maybee this weekend i'll force some time for TLC for old blue.

RE: Upset at times...need tranny and TC!

Its a 1995. "LSC wanna be" (i had all the chrome painted body color DK portofino blue to match body.) But would much prefer the smooth inserts the LSC has and the smooth rear bumper. I got it up on car domain.com if you wanna see buildup when the engine was out at shop.

RE: Upset at times...need tranny and TC!

Well it seems im stuck over here in desert for 6 months now for the USAF. Havent been on here in a while. At least i know when i get back theres going to be a new P1-SC and intercooler going into old blue when i get back. I'm still trying to find vendor for the tranny with 3500 stall.
I'll be comming back debt free, so well see if i cant get this thing into the 8's with some forced inducton and a 125 shot of Nos. "Hey they said the C-5 would never get off the ground"...hahah "All they needed was more horsepower!" hahah
Looking forward to some cookouts when i get back to Florida if i can hook up with the southern members. The lanscape here sucks with nothing but rocks and sand to look at for 6 months. I miss the beaches...

RE: Upset at times...need tranny and TC!

When I get home I'll take a closer look at your graph and my trans calculator....I'll see if I can't figure out a good stall, as well as wher you should be shifting...

RE: Upset at times...need tranny and TC!

I hope this helps. On the left is the red car n/a with a cuple bolt ons (3.73's, MAF longtubes, ect). On the right is Eli's car with about the same bolts ons, plus 4.10's and a 3200 stall convertor. All on a crappy track. Eli had some really crappy tires as well.

A 9.00 is not too bad. My car ran a n/a best of 8.995 1/8th @ 81.2 13.7X @ 102.57. 60ft time was still a 2.1X. If you get a decent track and a 3500 stall a 1.9 should not be tought ot get. With that MPH/and ET a 1.90 short time is a 13.1-2 @ 101-102.

If you are making high 2XX's to the wheels you should be trapping around 103-104 unless your car is a pig.

with a 75 shot I was around 106.0-7 A 125 shot I was around 110.5-112.5

I hope this helps

RE: Upset at times...need tranny and TC!

Thanks..yeah it does help. Thank you Pony. I'll need the tranny built when I get back and am planning around 3500 stall. I want the bigger hardened output shaft and all the Jerry mods like in TCCOA article on buildup. I'll have to bug all you guys when i get back on "who and where" has the best deal to get all the parts. Maybee if theres a local (within 200 miles) shop from 32542, I'll head to him with trany in my truck.

I also read in interesing article in Mustangs and Fast Fords this week, about the rearend they built up for thier project stang. What if anything can be done to stiffen our IRS links? Like welding more aliminum to "box them up"? You can actually see my rear tires go forward when I slam it on launch in slow motion in video.

I'm all ready running the big Addco swaybar, and poly center carrier bushings. Sometimes on highway I let off and coast then slam gas down and it almost feels like somethings binding, and other times it just is smooth as glass taking off.?????

RE: Upset at times...need tranny and TC!

Thanks a bunch. Ill saved and forwarded that webpage you gave me for when i get home in 5 months or so. I'll prolly go with one of thier premade 1800 dollar ones with all the extras like the shaft. Then my entire driveline will be new and should take the beating. Im worried about the 28spline axles holding up to hard launches on ET street tires.
I'll checkout what all TCCOA has to offer about the upper and lower swingarms, and wished i switched to the mustang axles setup when i bought my Eaton posi and stud kit for the 8.8 28 splines.
My car is virtually stripped of all padding and noise insulation, spare tire, and jack, factory phone, and amp. Its as light as i can get it without removing interior pieces like seats. I still could do a K member under the engine, but i think i made up for it with no manifolds anymore, even still using my stock AC compressor.
Im torn between the chrome SVT cobra 5 stars like geno used to run, or some lightweight WELD wheels from Summit (5 stars) But i hate polising aluminum, and the stock 20 spoke PITA cleaning and would prefer the easy clean and wipe chrome. Either way ill be doing 17's so i dont loose too much gear even though the 18's look way better. Well see what happens when i get back. I might just drive the car to Lousianna and leave it there for a month while the tranny gets its goods.
