No need to feel stupid. It's just that it was decided that the server resources for those things should benefit the club members who pay for the server.

I don't think HTML is implemented for security reasons.

Basically the way I understand the vBulletin software - signature images, avatars, etc... are from the files on the server - either stock files, admin uploads or files uploaded by the specific user. Also, 'attached' files(usually images) are stored on the server.

Right click my sig image or avatar and click 'properties' as an example.

bbcode attached to a remote picture wouldn't drain server resources, its just a choice they make here

Posting "BB code attached to a remote picture" is fine in any regular post because another server is "hosting" the image. Plain and simple.

Did you not read what I wrote?

Here, I'll do it for you...

Note the URL domain for the signature pic.

The 'choice we made' was simple - the Vbulletin software we adopted basically made it for us.

Members(to be read as "dues paying members of the club" - not users of the message board) expressed they would like to see 'something' in the form of membership recognition. The server costs are paid from the club treasury and the board resolved certain privileges on the new message board be afforded to those who financially support the club with their dues. I fail to see anything wrong with that.

The original question was how to get a signature pic. I attempted to answer it "diplomatically" without sounding like a salesman hawking on the street corner to pony up 20 bucks to "join the club". I don't want anyone to feel they have to pay to have pics in a message board signature, that's plain silly. But if they feel otherwise motivated to join the club, they will then benefit as a member of the club at least to the extent we few volunteers who operate it can provide. :)

umm first off its nothing personal, relax yourself. I own 3 forums and numerous vbulletin licenses as well as my server and a reseller, I know how it works. I allow attached bbcode sigs on a site with way more traffic and it doesn't slow it down, my statement was accurate, I stand by what I wrote, maybe you didn't read what I wrote. If you are defensive about hawking your product then so be it. I won't discuss this any further

Mike, we're a small group of volunteers here. This is a car club which happens to have a message board, that those who volunteer run as best we can. We don't want to make those who choose not to join the club feel unwelcome, because they are welcome here, but we do want to offer our members benefits, as we have very little advertising here to generate any revenue.

Using Vbulletin was new to us, and we all had a lot to learn in a short time, and it took a lot of our own personal time, but we're doing the best we can.

Actually, I still don't understand what you wrote. You're talking about slowing down the board, but you haven't actually addressed (at least from what I read) whether or not BBsigs use server space. But still, that was decided based on using the new software to be a benefit for the members of the car club, based on the information we had at the time we switched over, so I don't know if it even matters at this point.
