Mark VIII Sports Roadster

I've always liked the Thunderbird Sports Roadsters so I thought I would try to make a similar cover for my Mark VIII.
I'll try to make just a vinyl half tonneau cover, but a fiberglass cover like the Sports Roadsters, would be cool on the Mark VIII.
Here's some photos of trying to get some basic measurements for the vinyl. If this works out ok, I want to make a full tonneau cover for it too.zztonnau1.JPGIMG_5976 (Large).JPGIMG_5978 (Large).JPG

This is a very good idea. I look forward to seeing the results. The lines of a Mark VIII should lend themselves to the look quite nicely.

I have a cousin who has an 80's Camaro with a similar cover. Looks sharp, for sure.

Do you want it over the headrests?

I was thinking perhaps a low profile styling bar perhaps modified with a horizontal bar just being the headrests to attach the cover to.

That's an interesting idea, maybe not that high though, I'm worried about air getting under it and pulling it off when I'm driving. As it is now, I've got enough material to block the air. I want it over the headrests to look more like the sports roadster but I may have to put some frame pieces from the headrests to the back to get that look. That's starting to get a bit more complicated, I might not go that route either, it might end up just being half a tonneau cover. This is also practice for making a full tonneau cover, I have another piece of vinyl for that.

I was thinking something similar to JP, but "flat." basically to allow you to run immediately "to" the backs of the headrests, then tuck down tightly behind them.

I mocked up a frame from cardboard angle iron, it didn't look good, the top bumps in the back under the cover sit too high in the back. I'm just going to go with a half tonneau for now. The full size cover is coming along, it's a lot of vinyl to work with.

You've got the right idea. I'd keep the headrests independent, where you can move them up and down. Have the cover rest on top of the seat back, and snug to the headrest sides and back.

It'd be nice to have, say a Mark VIII trunk key cover behind each headrest, on the cover. Or one in the center with a trunk lock that could lock the cover to the car.
